How does PCGS grade JFKs Vs. NGC?

I just got this 1964 Accent Hair JFK in a NGC PF68 holder. What would one of these typically grade at in a PCGS slab?
I realize it depends on the individual coin, but on average do they tend to be more or less generous with the grades?

I had an NGC Accented Hair cross straight over in PCGS but, of course depending on the coin, you can look for the same grade or possibly a point under (stands with most Moderns). Rarely will you see an upgrade.

NGC's expertise lies with Classics and circulated coins.

In this series, the same or a one point drop. It's not really the grade that gets slaughtered when crossing from NGC to PCGS, it's the CAM and DCAM designation. There are a lot of CAM designated NGC Kennedy's that would not make the designation in a PCGS holder, and a lot of UltraCAM NGC's that would be downgraded to CAM at PCGS.

In any event, for a non-cameo'd coin, there is no real financial incentive to cross it at this grade level, unless it crosses at 68 and you paid about $45 or less for it in the NGC holder. If it crosses at 67, you'd need to be down around $25 or less on your purchase price.

However, if it's for you registry set, then it makes perfect sense to cross it, particularly if you got it cheap.

  • Russ,

Paid $34. No intention of submitting it in the near future, but eventually.

    Clark,

You can't beat that deal with a stick. Even I would have been a buyer at that price. Was I asleep or something?

  • Russ,

You may have been scared off by the $7.50 shipping charge. But, I also got a '64 NGC PF69 from them, and they shipped both for $7.50. 1378782421 / 1378783238.

BTW, feel free to take a nap anytime I see a good deal!

If you are going to send it to PCGS, crack it out, you will avoid the built in bias that accompanies another slab's submission to a competitor. It swings both ways. I used to think PCGS was tougher on them, but having see some of the ones in slabs online for sale and at the last 3 coin shows I attended I dunno anymore. If you like the coin keep it the way it is, in an NGC holder. You can collect just as nice coins in their holders (kennedies, i.e.) for less cost. Yes you might not be able to sell it in the short run for as much, but you also haven't paid as much for it.

Recently I've found NGC to be MORE strict on proof Kennedys. Of course if the coin were graded a long time ago then who knows.

The CAM/DCAM standard that NGC uses appears to have been tightened a little to be in line with that of PCGS.
  • A few years back I had a dealer (who was a large PCGS submitter at the time) send in 4 NGC graded Accent Hairs for crossover. 3 were PF69 - a low end 69, a solid 69 which is a better coin than the PCGS PR69 Acc Hair I own, and a stunning 69 which is far superior to the PCGS PR69 Acc Hair - and 1 NGC PF68 which was PQ with cameo obverse and a light cameo reverse - a solid 68....... a 68.99 which I was hoping would come back as a 68CAM. I got back 3 NGC PF69s and one PCGS PR68. Needless to say I was pissed!

Personally I think NGC does an excellent job on Kennedy proofs. I've got NGC 70UCAMs that are better coins than a lot of the PCGS 70DCAMs I have - a lot more bang for the buck. I haven't questioned the grade on any of the NGC 70s I own but have passed on a number of PCGS 70s. Based on the coins I own and have seen I would say NGC is more consistant with the grades - especially with the CAM/DCAM designations. You'll find a lot more NGC CAMs than PCGS CAMs cuz PCGS will let those questionable ones go DCAM image ie - look at the bicentennial issue Kennedy proofs - tough to DCAM that reverse and NGC knows that!

Plus NGC scores bonus points with me cuz they recognize and slab the 1966 SMS No FG (FS-013.9) and the leader of certification companys thumbs their nose at it and me! imageimageimageimage
