Should I Snipe This Flying Eagle Cent?

THANKS EVERYONE for your help. I'm passing this one by. Appreciate your posts!

I've been watching this 1857 Flyer since it was posted on eBay. Problem is, I'm always a little uneasy about MS Flying Eagle Cents that I can only see in cyberspace. So, I would appreciate any and all opinions on this cent. Especially; is the toning natural, what about those hairlines, any comments on the grade, the seller. Thanks in advance for any help in shirking my responsibilities. Is it a sniper? image

7-day return privlege for refund of bid amount, so long as item remains in original, easy-to-see-all-sides holder.

I guess if you don't like it return it.

Raw high grade copper is a gamble. I would rather buy one already certified.
Stick to PCGS, NGC, and ANACS.

Thanks Placid, your reply is both logical and correct. However, this is a case of coin lust, pure and simple. When coin lust bites I've found its best to seek as much moderating input as possible. The return policy aside, anybody out there love-hate-(would be worried) about this coin.

Buying raw copper sight seen, is tough enough. On Ebay.......slabbed only, unless you prefer migraines image Certain coins can be purchased raw, without too many worries, this one isn't one of those. Never mind that the coin looks like poop in the scan. Find one slabbed. Last warning image

The coin takes a good picture image
If it's worth the current price or not no clue here.
You probably won't win it anyway image
  • "view the image from at least arm's length"

I agree with the seller stay at least an arms length away (the color looks way to bright to me)

I can appreciate wanting to snipe that one, but if the picture is accurate the color is funny. Of course it will never slab with those marks, that look like album slides, but could also be harsh cleaning. This is one you need to see in person.

    Mike,
    Thanks

I wondered about those "hairlines". I thought true hairlines were the result of scrubbing, not slab marks?
  • The seller is Paul Sims. Beware on raw coins. He's OK on slabbed stuff, but his raw coins don't turn out as advertised.image

A would question whether this his HIS picture of the coin you're receiving. Nothing implied, it just looks like a stock photo to me.

  • I didn't know this seller was Paul Sims. He's a crook and a half. His raw coins are all cleaned, altered, or fake. Nothing but overgraded garbage. I wouldn't touch this auction.

I spent a long time looking at this yesterday. Despite the damge, it's an interesting coin with an excellent obverse strike but seems to be missing a small patch of feathers (cud?). I've always been curious about this method of imaging because it almost looks like an artist's rendering, especially with coppers, and makes me unsure about what it really looks like.

    Paul,
I missed that "missing patch of feathers", sure does look like a cud - very interesting. The color/tone of the picture is really confusing. I've swung back and forth on my feelings about this coin all week. That patch is intriguing.image
