It's a die crack, and they are quite common on a lot of coins. Your coin has some attractive rim toning, and the die crack is left over from the minting process. Take a look at some Shield Nickels sometime. If you actually find one WITHOUT any diecracks, you've done well. Two cent pieces are also like that. I wouldn't return the coin just because of the die crack.
