Derek Jeter Autograph

Well, from the latest card Fleer has sent me I am beginning to understand how some "error" cards make it out into the public. Originally I had contacted them about a Kenyon Martin jersey patch card that should have been serial numbered of 25 but wasn't. At first their response was "how much is in listed for in Beckett". I had replied that Beckett lists the card as N/A for a price, and even if they did list a price it would be for the regular card and not the error version missing the serial number.

They wanted me to send the card and they would send me something of "equal value". I told them I would like to know what exactly they would send before I sent them my card, so the lady at Fleer said she could send me a nice autograph and to list a few players. Well, since Derek Jeter is with Fleer I thought that might be a good autograph to ask for.

The lady that worked there she would check with her boss and get back to me. Took a couple weeks but she did get back to me offering this,

2001 Fleer Authority MM4AU Derek Jeter MM AU/100

I was very surprised they offered that and gladly accepted. I knew they were limited to 100 but wasn't sure if they were serial numbered. I mean how could Fleer send a serial numbered card like that?

I found out the answer to that Friday when the card arrived UPS. It is half serial numbered, it doesn't have the front half of the serial number but has the second half and is a replacement for damaged cards.

Now if I would have seen a card like this listed on auction somewhere I would have considered it an error that was missing part of the serial number. Not true though, it's not an an error, but what exactly is it?

I also have to wonder why Fleer would send something out like this and not destroy it? According to a recent article by Beckett card companies destroy these replacements or expired unclaimed redemptions to comply with their licensing agreements.

  • Destroy the high end cards that are unredeemed? I thought that all of those unredeemed high end cards went out the back door to places like Dave & Adam's Card World to sell on ebay...
