Anybody ever send a full unopened roll?

Have you ever sent a full, machine crimped roll to be graded? Will they do that?

My dad had an original roll of Franklin halves, and ebay has no recent history of rolls being sold of this year. I know that there are variables to Franklins, like full bells, and I don't know if I want to sell the whole roll or break it open.

If I did want these coins slabbed, do I need to open up the roll first?

If it were me I think I would have to break open the roll and find the coins that are worth submitting. If the roll contains a bunch of ms64 non full bell lines then these type of coins are probably not worth the price of submission. It is very diffulcult to locate any ms65 fbl's in rolls as so many of these coins have enough bag marks to knock them down a grade. What year is this roll?

  • It is a 1955 roll.
  • I don't see why not. They will take complete proof sets and open them for you. I would, however, be inclined to take Lucy's advice and pick out the nicest coins yourself and send those in.

Yes, sending in an entire roll of Franklin's may not be the best idea as many of the pieces may not be worth sending in and you would be disappointed with the grading results. I would either keep the roll intact or open it carefully and send in only the 2 or 3 best pieces in the roll.

I'm not quite sure if PCGS will accept the unopened roll 'as is' for grading. You may have to open it yourself and put the coins in flips yourself assuming you wanted to submit the entire roll. I have heard of only one instance in the past where PCGS took a roll 'as is' for grading, and it was quite a while back and a very expensive roll. Maybe someone else knows for sure if they do that.

Cherrypick it or sell it as is.
No idea if pcgs would accept a roll,I kind of doubt it thou.

Sending an unopened roll, especially of Franklins may prove to be quite a dissapointment. You're better off trying to see what's in it first and then send the cherry ones.
