Am I getting slabbed around?

Just got off Ebay - Franklin Halfs - and found two claims of being slabbed that I did not understand. I felt slabbed was
done by a clearing house like PCGS, but Blue Moon had a slabbed coin in a typical slab holder with out any
indication who did the grading.

Then another claimed a coin was slabbed by Hannes Tulving. What does that mean?

Is this a ligimate way to advertise a coin? I don't know and am just asking.

There are many different slab companies Here's another thread on a list of most of them and now that coin world is selling "SLABS" i'd be really careful about buying slabbed coins online now that don't say who the slabbing company is. There are many that do NOT grade accurately and you know SOMEONE is going to use the coinworld slabs and try to pass them off as proffesionally graded.

The appropriate and definitive terminology if you are looking for a coin encapsulated by a particular service is to look for/ask if the coin is certified by an independent grading service and which one. Then you determine if the coin meets your criteria.

NEVER assume a coin described as slabbed is the same as "certified by an independent grading service". You see folks are calling the CoinWorld holders "slabs" and thus convoluting the term. Yes, there was a time when "slab" was practically synonymous with 3rd party encapsulation, but it isn't anymore. I don't even think CW is advertising this holder as a slab, but or course, I could be wrong. It does, however, lend more credence to my contention that you shouldn't presume the terms are synonymous.

I have some coins slabbed by Hannes Tulving Rare Coin Investments. They slabbed coins in the late 1980's but I think they only did it for coins they were selling to their own customers (I was one image ). I found this one which looks just like the Tulving slabs I have.

Post the item number(s) of the Franklins that don't indicate who did the slabbing you are talking about so we can check them out.

  • Stay away from PCI, I repeat stay away from PCI!!! Don't buy any coins that have been graded by PCI.

if they dont say who slabbed the coin .ask, pcgs, ngc. etc. etc. also check out their feeback, and see what others have to say about them..i saw one seller like this, and he had over 185 negs. very simple, take your business elsewhere....
