Raw 09SVDB: the BEST Lincoln I've ever seen

My Dad's (aged) friend showed me his coin collection (all raw). As a wheat cent collector, I was very interested in his early Lincolns and of course, I had to ask if he has the 09SVDB. He did, I saw it, and am still in a state of awe. Full red, very strong strike, not a carbon spot to be seen (even under magnification), no dings, bag marks, etc. The most pristine early Lincoln I have EVER seen (any date, any MM, any!!!!). The 09VDB's I've seen in MS67 aren't even close! MS67? Better! MS68? Who knows in the hands of PCGS but, I gotta tell you, I have never seen an early Lincoln that had more eye appeal (it glows....).

I'm trying to convince Bob (Dad's friend) to adopt me!!

Bob has never heard of PCGS, NGC, etc. I had to show him one of my slabs to convince him of their existence. Way too cool! A collector through and through!!

I love to look at the elder coin collectors collections. They really love thier sets. I'm not talking about older coin hoarders which just filled holes with anything they could find but those elder true collectors deserve all of our respect. God bless them! All of them!

Just think, 20 years ago, every nice (20+ year old) coin in a slab today was raw back then!

i personally know a gentleman who has a stunning hoard of washington quarters that he put away in the 40's & 50's. no doubt, if he got em all slabed, it would blow away all the pop reports. he probably has a full roll of 1932 alone, p, d & s, and not a one of em is under ms-64. amazingly, the latest coin in his hoard is dated 1961! he actually stopped putting these away in 1961! by my estimate, he has a total of forty rolls of coins. he also has smaller hoards of halves & dimes, but they don't compare to his washingtons.

interestingly, he collects other coins, barbers, morgans, gold, etc., and does have some slabs. so in this case, he does know about slabs, but has no interest in certifying, or selling for that matter, his hoard. someday, when it does come time for that stuff to be sold, like i said, the "pop reports" are gonna be blown away.

i gotta believe theres a lot more like this hoard out there. makes it dangerous to pursue those "finest graded" coins though, because like i said, there's more out there that just have'nt been slabbed yet.

  • KARL, I totally agree with you on the pops being quite deceptive. In the big picture of our hobby third party grading companies are really just infants at this time. After reading these boards for some time now I have came to the reallity that I am a VERY modest collector compared to some of our forum members. I collected the bulk of my collection from circulation as a boy in the 50's and 60's when I would pick out my favorites from my paper route money, allowance, snow shoveling, lawn mowing.... I now have quite a few high end circulated and some MS light to medium toned Walkers,Franks,SLQ's,Roosies,Mercs,Buffs, and nearly a full set of very nice wheat cents that are all raw. Now I'm not saying that my collection would have ANY effect on the pops as I'm quite sure they wouldn't.But I don't feel the need to spend the money on slabbing as I am fairly sure of what I have and plan on leaving them to my two sons.I wonder what they will do with themimageimage My point is there has to be many many collections out there that have been tucked away for years that are much bigger and better than mine and eventually they will be in plastic no doubt. This I think will have a great effect on the pops.IMO....Pat

As an on going freebie to collectors, they (PCGS) put the finger prints on the coins for no extra charge. Who say nothing in life is free!!!imageimage

thats just the point ,with the new coins, there are bags, hoards. and god knows what, that have been hidden away somewhere from someone. some of the things i have seen since i started to collect.. that didnt last, the bu roll market back in the 1960s, the proof set craze... bags of seated dollars....bags and bags and bags of morgan dollars, rolls of st. gaudens...i remember even seeing several old barrels of large cents, all mint state that were found in one of the new england states, redfeild, binon, and only time will tell all the others, the list could go on and on, and it will as time passes, many of the new collectors of today, dont know about how things like this have happened time and time again....if you like the coin buy it, if you buy the coin because someone else says, oh look, there are only 50 of these in this condition, yet tens of thousands if not millions were made, top pops have no future for the long term, time has proven this to be true, if you want to invest in something, research and knowledge will prove to be your best friend.....thanks for reading ....classics....
  • Was just reading in the latest CoinWorld about the Counterfeiter "Hoffman" ! He was good at making fake dies via the electroplating process... some years back... he reproduced some 14 Ds and '09 vdbs and is claiming from prison that the recent mule '59 D w/wheat reverse is his creation from back in '89... it's just resurfaced again.. Incredible but so is the story... front page CW Sept. 30 issue.
