Coinwise: Is this year turning out the way you expected it to?

When it comes to your collecting goals, is this year- now that we're almost ten months into it- turning out the way you expected it to?
Are you making the collecting choices you planned?
Or, have you found yourself drifting either accidently or on purpose toward another Series, another coin interests?

Are Coins also" Performing" as you expected or have there been some surprises along the way?

  • The past few months ive been is that "selling phase". Some coins have done extremly well, some ive lost a few hundred on or more on. I just sold a AU50 1849-O, it sold on ebay for $460. I was really dissapointed w/ that. I was expecting more in the range of 600-650. Oh well.......

Not for me. The huge influx of "collectors" has driven up prices of ordinarily inexpensive items that I was in the process of acquiring, and more than likely will expect to receive like compensation when they let these things go. Of course, things will settle back to the norm, but in the meantime, I have to put some of my goals on hold. I refuse to get caught up in the "let's get max dollars out of the unsuspecting public."

Why should a dealer sell to me at a realistic price if there is a greater chance that someone a little less knowledgeable, or withmore disposable income and unknowingly supporting an inflated market, will give him top dollar?

This was the first year in a long time that I have sold more than I bought. The dramatic increase in the prices for proofs 1936-1942 made it too difficult to not to sell. I have purchased less from the US Mint than I have in past years, the quarter designs have been more and more disappointing, which surprised me. I also am less focused on series completion and enjoying more the purchase of coins that just appeal to my eye, again something that was not planned.

Edited to add: BTW great question, does your inquiring mind ever stop? image

I'm happy image I got some nice slabbed material, some old coins full of history, and I completed one of my dreams- I got an MS buff (and a gorgeous 66 to boot!)

PS- let's see if I'm happier when I come back from the coin store image

  • Better! I finished my Lincoln Cents earlier this year.image My Jefferson's and Roosevelts are up to date and our (daughter and me) State Quarters are current too. The only low spot is not buying any bulk Darkside yet this year. I try to get 20-30 lbs a year to sort thru.
  • I've been so busy this year that I haven't had the time I need to find coins for my collection. I hope to be able to pay more attention to the hobby when it slows down at work, although it's tough to predict when that will happen!

Most of my coins seem to be staying the same or going up in value, or at least in prices I see being charged for them.

Yes, with God's help, the year is turning out well. Here is why

1.My collection is progressing nicely. Toned Mercury dimes and Barber Halves are finding a nice
    home in my collection.

    2.Fair health.

3.Looks like we are going to be more resolute in fighting terrorist scum with the new Bush premptive
    strike(shoot first, talk later) doctrine.

  • Yes,a very good year.I have exceeded my losses in the first nine months of 2002,as opposed to all of 2001.Only thing saving me is the windfall of the buff dollars.I buy wooden nickels. My motto: buy high, sell low.Works everytime.

Well, early in the year I was still lukewarm in the hobby but it ended up being a great experience for me. I've learned a lot and spent more. I spent more this year on coins than in all the other years I've collected put together. But now I've got the brakes on. image

I have been shifting towards education and believe I'm far better at grading and stuff now than before.
