Morgan Pops Blew Me Away!!

Was kinda bored tonight so started surfing the registry sets and was blown away by some of the pop numbers. What amazed me was the number of Morgans graded by PCGS. Some examples of some of the higher numbers(commen dates) in MS 63 or greater:

1904-O.....34,981
1879-S......58,021
1887.........63,975
1880-S......82,712
1881-S....141,207

I know Morgans are probably the most collected coin but are there any others that compare or even come close to these numbers?

As you said, morgans are the most collected. Also they are graded in a very unique fashion with
the contact concentrated on the cheek and left field. Since these coins were transported and stored
in canvas bags, these areas were the most exposed, and also being the most high relief areas.
The sheer abundance of these 19th century coins in high grade translates into high demand. Think about it, what other coins from the 19th century can be had for $30 in MS64. It it also a fact that
30% of all the grading that all of the grading services do is Morgans, think about that!!!!!!

  • The Morgan Pops are definately super high. I think some of the other highest pops are found in $20 Saints (over 100000 for the 24) and many dates of Walkers are over 10000 as well. Remember that back in 89 some of these coins had quite a bit higher value in MS63/64/65. Also, as grading fees have slowly gone down, some more coins have been sent in that maybe weren't before.

Pops are just a guide and do not always reflect the true numbers due to crackouts for regrading.

...But this probably DOESN'T mean there are only 12 1881-S Morgans in MS64 that just keep getting cracked and resubmitted...

  • Placid...I know pops are not that accurate but still...if you add in the Morgans slabbed by the "other" companies too, you end up with quite a pile of Morgans. image

I just thought I would bring it up image

There is really only one 1881-s that keeps getting cracked out over and over image
I wouldn't be suprised thou if there were really only 20% of what are listed.
  • Placid.......ROTFL!!

Another thought...start multiplying these numbers by $30 ea submission fee!!!

1938-d buff 33,199 in grades 65 or higher.

I don't have access to the pop report but I would guess that 1923 and 1924-p peace dollars have pretty high numbers.
NGC has over 80k in ms63+ on the 1923p
  • Which makes a series like Franklins all the more interesting when most of the higher population coins in MS65FBL only number in the hundreds!
