What happens to re-grades?

Recently I sent in some PSA 8 OC cards for re-grade without qualifiers. If the card comes back a PSA 6 will it have the same serial number as the PSA 8 OC and changed in the database or will it have a brand new serial number and the other serial number eliminated. Does anybody know?

cert number stays the same, database/pop report willreflect change, usually takes a few days.
