BigDave - when I first started collecting lincoln's 5 years ago I asked the same question. I asked knowledgeable collectors and the answer was always the same. No matter how well struck or not it doesn't matter. I have never even had the question come up again in 5 years. Seems pretty hard to believe, but true. I would have thought it would have something to do with denoting a superior strike - nope! Nadda. One broker I ask didn't even know what I was talking about. Initials on his sholder??????Now that was scary. I'll be curious if you hear anything else on the matter.
Well, let's just say that vdb on the shoulder is not a significant feature! It's barely perceptible under the best of conditions (I've got it on my 1946-D, which is an MS67). It's got to be the quality of the strike and the age of the die.
I have a 1955 BU Lincoln that is also missing the VDB. I assumed it wouldn't be worth a premium, so I never did any research on it. I know for sure it's worth at least 1 Cent!!!!!!
I've seen many Lincolns with the VDB missing in other companies' holders. They note it on the slab. The majority I've seen have been PCI coins. They're not worth that much of a premium.

I will offer you this, two cents for that 1955 BU, now you can say it is worth at least 2 cents And the offer stands until I perish, so you can say it's worth two cents for awhile yet.

PS. I'll let you know when I go, I'll write it in the fog on the bathroom mirror...lol.
