I made my first MS70

I submitted a pair of West Point dollars - one proof and one business strike. The proof came back PR69DC and the unc came back MS70.image

That makes up for all my silver 25c coming back PR68DC.image

Nice, those are not easy image
  • Congrats! Was that from PCGS? I thought they stopped grading as high as MS-70.
  • Totally excellent! It is wonderful to see a "70" in your results!!!!!imageimageimageimageimageimage

PCGS has been very hard on proofs these last few weeks, it seems (and/or the mint has been producing lower quality stuff.)
  • wheeeee!

What's your secret? Did you hex them before they left?

No, it was from AGC. If I would have written PR70DC on the form for the proof I'd have a great pair.image

They toss out a token 70 from time to time so they can say "look, we didn't change the standard, we still give them."

  • Congratulations...It'll be interesting to see what the 70 brings on the market!!!!

Congratulations! How much do you charge to submit coins? I have a few I'd like to get a MS-70 on.

Not even close with this coin. The current MS-70 Population is 108! The MS-69 Population is 1,485. So, 96% of the coins graded by PCGS received a grade of MS-69, or better.

The numbers are for the Proof coin are 790 in PR-69 DCAM, with 3 higher. So, of the 876 coins graded by PCGS, 91% are PR-69 DCAM, or higher.

Out of tens of thousands of moderns graded over the last three years. Like I said; token coins.

I would hate to think that the number of state quarters (or Kennedy halves) has any bearing on the number of Commem's getting a perfect grade. From what I have seen, it appears that only the commems are getting any of the 70's though.

    dbldie55,

The real issue is not which coins are currently being blessed with the grade. The real issue is that the standard changed and, prior to that change, far more coins across the board were granted the 70 grade. An issue which PCGS refuses to address.

I believe PCGS is addressing that issue. They are quietly buying these MS70 Mistakes back. Send them back the spotted, tainted, good-for-nothing-POS "MS/PR70" coin and PCGS will refund you the difference (substancial payout for those in the know).

I've talked with more than one Dealer who have done exactly that and received a refund each time- mostly on SBA's/ Ike's and a couple of Kennedies.
PCGS just isn't shouting it in the streets.

Who are these 2, or more, dealers? Please include telephone #'s, if you have them. I have a few 70's I'd like to talk to them about.

    No problem.
One, I'm positive doesn't mind you calling him (the other? -Let me check with him first):

Good luck. No one should be stuck with a bad coin.
