Anybody ever seen a PCGS-01 graded Morgan?

Hello everyone!

I have a couple that are graded Fair-02, and they make me wonder what a Poor-01 looks like. Anyone have some scans they could share?

Thanks!

In the PCGS grading and counterfeit book they have a picture of every Morgan from MS-70 through PO-01. The PO-01 has barely a date and the rim is worn to Miss Liberty and the eagle.

My PCGS "Worse Known" Registry has one. I think it's an 1884.
The trick is there must be room to see if there is a MintMark or not, and the placement of that MM means the detail is usually too strong to warrant the full PO01 grade, thus the FA02 and up.
This one is slick, other than a ghost of a portrait. You need to tip the coin at an angle to even read the date. The reverse has detail, about the size of a quarter, right around where the MM would be. Outside that quarter area? Smooth and slick- just like an authentic PO01 needs to be.

Couple the full lack of detail with No Problems (most low grade Morgans have a problem or two (or three. . .) and you can see how it would be difficult to find one of these.

    Hello Braddick!

Many thanks for the very clear description. You touched upon exactly the issue I was wondering about: how and where can a Morgan have enough wear to make it worse than a Fair-02, but still leave enough of the date/mint mark to make it identifiable?

MS68 coins are easy... Poor-01 is another matter entirely!

What does everyone think this one will be at PCGS... a Fair-02, or an AG-03?

  • Link

I think it's borderline FR02-AG03. Not sure which way it will lean, though.

  • Dennis, are you going to send that in? Are you going to compete with Braddick on some "Worst Known" sets! I think those coins are pretty cool, but I'm afraid if I bought them, I would just lose a bunch of money and everyone would call me crazy!

Always buying music cards of artists I like! PSA or raw! Esp want PSA 10s 1991 Musicards Marx, Elton, Bryan Adams, etc. And 92/93 Country Gold AJ, Clint Black, Tim McGraw PSA 10s
  • I'd have to go with PCGS AG-03. Great coin. Nice strong date and mint mark for the amount of wear.

    JJacks --

Yes, I am going to send in the '79-CC. But I don't plan on being any threat to Braddick, per se. My interest in these low-grade lovelies is limited to a mint mark type set. I have the S and O in PCGS-02 already, and the P is in my pocket now... I'd say about high-end 03 so far.

Speaking of which, does anyone out there have a '21-D in less than VF that I could buy? I'm carrying a VF35ish one in my pocket now, but it's becoming clear this will take much longer than I have the patience for.

Thanks very much for the link. I'm determined to figure out how to do that!

I'll be sure to post the results on the '79-CC when they're in.

I'm just sorry I won't be around to see that...

  • That 79-CC looks like an AG-03 to me.
