ncs now rates about a 2 !!!

just read that ncs will "slab" problem coins now. i think someone mentioned it in another thread a couple weeks back.

so on a scale of 1 - 10, where "10" means you have utter confidence in your own grading & prefer to buy coins sight-seen, i now put ncs at about a "2". why? because they will now holder a "problem" coin for you w/ the (alleged) details grade. btw, i put anacs at about a "3".

now ncs is basically ngc, right? & it looks like the holders are identical except for a different color insert. i sense they have one-upped pcgs on this issue.

so why do i put anacs ahead? well, ncs slams anacs for putting a "net grade", but i like the net grade because it gives you an idea of the severity of the problem. for example, "unc details/cleaned/net xf-45" is obviously a much worse coin than "unc details/cleaned/net ms-60". too bad ncs didn't carry it one step further w/ some way for you to evaluate the severity of the problem.

anyone else got an opinion on this? despite all the arguments about who's better, etc, i really didn't see any separation between ngc, icg and pcgs before now, but i think ngc/ncs has finally embraced reality and caught on to the fact that "gee, you know what? some coins have problems." but they are still missing the boat by not taking it that extra step like anacs

thankfully, by the nature of the "grading" not including a final technical grade, you can't have a "grey-sheet" or "blue-sheet" or "vomit-colored-sheet" to look up sight-unseen values, so you still need to see the coin before you buy it. but maybe ngc will begin to catch up w/anacs in this regard.

& btw, i crack out all coins, including anacs, so please nobody say that i'm promoting 1 plastic over another.

whaddya'll think???

Can you give me an example of what NCS's slab would say for a typical problem coin and what the comparable slab would say if it was graded by the other services? I suppose I'm looking for a specific comparison statement so I can better understand your point.

  • I think net grading problem coins is certainly the way to go, so I totally agree with your assessment. It is good to see someone else grading problem coins as their are so many nice coins in the market that have some type of problem. Why do you crack out all of your coins if you don't mind me asking???

the slab they show in the newest coinworld shows a morgan dollar. says Unc. Details. " obverse wipe". Then has some small disclaimer on the bottom of the tag that says...."guarantee authenticity only detail grade does not determine value"

Its a nice looking slab actually. looks to be just like NGC but clear!

I personally don't care for ANACS assigning my coin a value. I never have and never will. I would prefer the way NCS appears to be going to do it. Let the coin stand on it's own merits and let the buyer/seller determine the value so long as the problem is noted. If you are looking at a problem coin whether slabbed or not it is up to you to determine the severity Versus value.

How long before PCGS jumps onboard!????

I think it's a great move for NGC. Might put a hurtin on ANACS.

Hooray for NCS !!!! they are starting to tell us what the coin doctors/conservers do. I wonder if they will begin putting coin doctor pedigrees on the holders ?

  • I agree with Dorkkarl that the ANACS net grade approach is useful as an opinion of how the coin's problem affects value. For many, this isn't a help, but my experience is that there are far more collectors that need the "net grade" clue to avoid overpaying for a problem coin.
Buy the coin...but be sure to pay for it.

<< <i>don't care for ANACS assigning my coin a value >>

note that i;m trying to point out that it gives some indication of the relative amount of damage. ie, like my other example , XF details, scratch, net VF-30 would presumably have less damage than XF detail, scratch, net F-12 i wouldn't use their "net grade" to determine value either. but i have found bargains w/ coins like "unc details scratch net ms-60" where the scr. was so danged tiny as to be a borderline call.

regarding segs, i know larry briggs pretty well, & have tremendous respect for his knowledge. however, i have frequently disagreed w/ their consistency on listing "prob's" on coins - esp. surface prob's. they seem outstanding at ferreting out repaired coins, etc, but a lot of coins w/ questionable toning are not so indicated.

finally, why do i crack out all my coins? several reasons, i'll just list 2. #1, i am a collector, not a business person. i usually buy coins to KEEP, and couldn't care in the slightest what some faceless, nameless, anonymous person thinks of my coins, nor do i care a lick about registry sets, or finest know, or pop-top, or any of the baloney that falls under the header "marketing tool". i buy coins that I LIKE. #2 consistency of display. i can't stand it when you see a dealer's case and there are ten different sized holders all stacked up hap-hazardly, w/ differnt color backgrounds, blah blah blah. all my coins are in 2x2 holders, plain an simple. it may sound simplistic, but lay out 100 bust halves in holders and waddya have? a mishmash of different sized holders, differnet colors, blah blah blah. lay out 100 bust halves? man, you ain't ever seen anything like it.

this is just what works for ME. i fully support other's having their own opinion.

& i gotta tell ya, i have had NO problem selling coins raw, if you have a good relationship w/ a dealer & work w/ someone who actually KNOWS something about grading, & doesn't have to rely 100% on cert.

Got one going there now to be holdered. Wish PCGS would do this to. Some people want their coins in holders. Nothing wrong with putting them in one with the listed problems. (it is just plastic)

Asked a question yesterday, was answered in 10 minutes. Still waiting for answers to about 4 questions I asked PCGS weeks ago.

i ain't a plastics person, & don't really muck around w/ the arguments about whose better (pcgs, icg, acg, ngc, abc, cbs, espn???), but i will say this: pcgs WILL get left behind if they don't confront and embrace the realities in today's marketplace. it has change a lot since '89, and people are a lot wiser now. bottom line is that EVERY coin deserves a grade, and to "bodybag" certain ones solely at their discretion is ludicrous.
