1998 phantom S Mint Sets

I have a friend who has several of the Phantom S 98 Mintsets, I remember something in Coin World about 3 years back, but have seen nothing sense. Does anybody know what these sets are worth or are they considered a rareity. Thanks in Advance

Must be truly phantom. Haven't heard of them either. Are they weak S marks or something?
  • from what we remember from the old coin world issue which we dont have a copy of , was probably an issue form late 98 or early 99, the article stated it was from a worn die, but on his mints sets there is just a very very faint shadow of an S with with a 10 loop, acording to my friend, I dont know which coins were without the S in the sets, but he has 7 or 8 that came from the same mint order. I will find out more about which coins were weak. Thanks

  • Just talked with gerald, my friend who has the mint sets, the weak s is on the cents, and he thinks he still has the coin world issue and is going to dig it up, but must not be much to it if not many here on the board dont remember it. When he finds the coin world article I will post what it has to say.
    thanks

If I remember the article correctly, those phantom S cents were produced using used proof dies. The S mintmark was polished off, and when the business stike cents were produced, there was a phantom S. It was in coin world and I believe a couple of other coin magazines around that time. Are the cents worth a premium? I doubt it.

  • I just got done looking up a 1989-S Lincoln cent in my redbook. At the bottom of that same page it states that since 1994 phantom mint marks are believed to be the result of the mint mark being removed from the master die. It also says values vary according to date and condition but are not significantly higher than for normal ones.

    I'm glad I have a redbook!
  • I would look thru coinworlds online archives, they might have something.

  • I have a 1998 and a 1999 phantom. The mint mark was not completely polished off, leaving a phantom trace. I don't think there's much to them, value-wise, above what they would normally sell for. At least I haven't seen anything. Who knows, maybe one day they'll take off. image
