It's probably in a Binion NGC holder though, MS67 * Just a guess, I don't even bother with Teletrade anymore, but know that they have a bunch of the Binion stuff, and BTW, why does nearly every Binion coin with any kind of decent tone get a *???? Not even ok stuff in those Binion slabs have * slabs galore.

  • MS 64 Nice coin. Fewer marks, strike could be better, toning so-so.

Teletrade is having all "rainbow" auction sunday and in the morgan section there are alot, about 20 of ngc binion coins all with toning and only one of them has the * designation.

I was very suprised there were not more.

    If in PCGS MS 65
If in NGC MS 66 or MS 67
Any other service they can't go over MS 70 that is the max--really MS 68 in others.

    Borderliner 64/65 is my guess.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

    dare to be different. MS67
  • hmmmm, thanks for the info Placid. That comment on the Binion slabs getting so many * designations on so-so coins was more of a general comment on ones that I have looked at, not so much on Teletrade, I had assumed(I know what it means already image ) that was the case with TT too. Thanks for looking that up.

As a collector of Morgans for over 30 years that one would make a 66 in PCGS, NGC or ANACS if graded properly. Before you say it, yes I have 65's in both slabs , sold 66's in both slabs, sold 67's in PCGS slabs, ask Larry PQPeace. I saw that coin listed and looked it up to see if it had the eye appeal purported by the *. BTW there are some surprising coins in that auction. I am hoping to pick up one in particular and maybe two, not Morgans.

  • Oh,Grade the NGC grader huh.Ok.
I,ll go ahead an assume the color is NT and give an otherwise blastwhite 63/64,a 65 for original color.
I can see NGC * 66 on this one. They usually grade one point higher than myself I,ve found.
Its a market grading issue I guess.
Those Binion coins should have some great colors as they sat in and underground vault out in the Nevada desert somewhere for awhile.

cam, its definitely a market grade. NGC admits to as did Rick Montgomery in his Q&A. A few years ago this was a 65. For better or worse they have decided to up the grades on nicely toned Morgans.
  • Mike, I definitely don't doubt your numismatic skills, but I personally don't think I could go as far to say that this would go in any holder at 66. And that goes back to grading via scan, for me, the coin is a nice 65 from what I can tell, the marks on the cheek are too numerous despite not being deep as far as I can see, the hair curl over the ear is not well-defined(for a 66 that is), and the splotch of gold running from the left rim onto the cheek is not attractive at all to me.

andy that is the fun in us trying to grade coins, they are just opinions. Your's is just as good as mine. Like I said whether we agree or not it will bring 66+ money and the grading companies seem to have no qualms about calling them 66's. I had to prove in another thread that common date morgans sell for the same price in either slab. Why because they both grade them very close to the same. In fact it was a thread started by someone who posted on this thread, thinking that there was a difference in grading and pricing. Like they say never let the facts get in the way of a good arguement.
