Some kind of struck-through? (help, Russ?)

Well, Russ that set I was telling you about did arrive pretty quickly, and I had no problems. But the half dollar has the number 1 on the date completely missing from the coin, and where it should be there's a white area, that is slightly rough. I don't know whether there's something on the coin causing the roughness or if it's in the strike. The seller's image is above, I thought it was just glare on the package but it is the coin. I'm thinking of submitting it through the error service. Beyond that, the coin looks really nice and should make cameo. The other coins in the set look average (the quarter is not toned as it appears in the image) but the penny looks like crap, but I don't care because I don't collect pennies. Do you think it could be struck through something? If so would the coin be worth anything? I haven't cut open the mint set yet but if I do I'll give you an up-close.

EXACTLY like the one a friend of mine (DanC on this forum) got from the same seller. I think it was caused by a filled die, but I'm nowhere near an expert on these things.

His is in for grading right now, arrived on the 12th. Since it's on a modern submission, it shouldn't be too long before we know what PCGS thinks.

I was thinking strike thru grease too, but I'm not an error collector. Russ, let me know what kind of grade he gets. Did he send it via mint error service or regular service?

It's in under regular service. My fault, since I din't know diddly about error coins.

Mine is less 'goobered up' than yours, but very similar.

I have seen other coins with similar errors. They have been attributed as "Filled Die Error" by PCGS. I recently sold a 1972D Ike with no 1 in the date just like this.It sold for about $25.
