Is anyone else getting Klez'd to death?

It seems that for the past month, I can't check my mail without Norton interrupting. Some of the emails are hysterically Klez cures. Not many E variants though. I was just wondering if I am the only lucky one, or if the darned thing is rampant again.image

  • I had one earlier this week. I thought it had died off since the last flurry when I received many, many.

Please don't send me any email! PMs work just fine image

I haven't received one in the last few weeks but it is still out there and a lot of people aren't keeping up to date on the antivirus software.

    Don,

I average between three and five per day, as well as a variety of other viruses each week. But, since I'm in thousands of address books, that's not unexpected.

EDIT: I should note that I actually don't "get" them. I leave all attachments on the server until I decide whether to download them, so the viruses actually get deleted before they make it to my local drive. So, I get lots of "attempts".

I love to get them. Fun to read the headers to see who is sending them. One of the many reasons to avoid a MS machine.

  • I use yahoo mail alot, it keeps stuff off my hard drive and they have a virus scanner.

  • Worse. I've been receiving a bunch of bounced e-mails from mail servers who reject viruses -- addressed to unknown parties with my return address.

Apparently somebody's infected machine is sending out viruses with my return address. Nice.
  • DHeathDHeath Posts: 8,472 ✭✭✭
That's terrible, the sender spoofed your return address. And I thought I was tired of it.

    Don,

The "sender" didn't spoof the address, Klez did. That's one of the "bonus" features of this nasty little piece of work. Not only does it send to addresses in the book, it uses them on the Reply To: line.

Of course, some of us use Eudora and don't have a problem with that.image

    Russ, NCNE
  • I do use Eudora, and it hasn't helped me! It's the other 99% that's the problem. image
  • LanLordLanLord Posts: 11,714 ✭✭✭✭✭
You should be able to right click on an infected message and search the properties to find the true sender and his/her IP address. I know I have tracked them down this way before. but every mail system is different so you may need to look around a bit to find it.
  • dbldie55dbldie55 Posts: 7,731 ✭✭✭✭✭
I just use VI and read the entire mail. If you look at the headers you can see who actually sent it. I have received the virus with me as the sender (I sent a virus to myself?), but in looking at the headers you can see who sent it. It is a big pain when your name ends up as the listed sender as people tell you that you sent them a virus. Happens in my company right now. I just say we cannot send a MS virus because we do not use MS machines and that it is just a spoofed reply-to address.

I've never caught it and only run Windows ME and W2K at the moment. solved all my virus probs years ago with one simple change in my computing habits (having operated a dialup BBS way back, I already knew not to run downloads before scanning them.) I just uninstalled all versions of Outlook image any other progs that could potentially be used as a proxy to bypass security, by assuming the rights of the user account the prog runs under, get zapped too. This stupid AOL dialer app is the next one to get the axe. Much better to close the doors that let them in than deal with unwelcomed guests afterwards, IMHO. I don't even run an active virus scanner now, only slows my PC down.

Oh, a good firewall helps too... even if you get infected with something more advanced, they won't be able to find and use your system.

You are not alone--I get an e-mail with it about 10-12 times a day.

I use vexira antivirus from central command and it works really well. In the last 2 years it has caught and deleted everything sent my way. I use win xp, netscape 7.0 and Vexira antivirus. I got Klez a month ago from my wife's account but it was gone in seconds.

I recommend vexira if anyone is shopping for a program.

    Hi Don
I had this Klex worm nit to long ago. I put up with it for about 6 weeks before figuring it out, that it was a virus that was giving me and my computer all the headaches. I finally did some searching and located a downloadable patch through Symantic and Haven't had much problems with it since. But for someone who does a wide range of business, it's definitely a different story.

I also had the Norton virus solfware installed on my computer, 2-3 years ago that is. I was constantly having problems with my computer and after about the 3rd cure through a Microsoft
tech I decided not to reinstall the norton stuff and have lived happily thereafter until this Klex thing. The way I figured it, if my server was filtering this stuff out before relaying the emails to me I had little to worry about. But now after the Symantic fix, I may go with there software as while I was doing my websearching I've learned that there are thousands of named viruses out there that could effect (my brain so to speak) and perhaps I've been lucky? I think not!

I just filter them out on the SMTP box. It saves me from all the viruses.

This may be a dumb question, but how do you know if you have the virus? I have a Mac, but use Outlook as my email server. I get approx. 10-15 of these emails a week.

I never used to get any, but the last few months, I have been receiving a bunch. Fortunately, I keep my virus software updated. One came from a buyer on ebay, but I don't think he even knew he was sending it. Fargen iceholes. Mark

The last couple weeks, I was getting e-mails from one person with the virus. I didn't open any and the server caught some, so I blocked his address.

With my computer a small message would pop up and would say that some winkxxx.exe had failed and that the program would be closed. The strange thing was the last 3 x's would randomly change. For awhile I just kept going through my computer and registry deleting the crap out of that wink thing every where I could find it and it would still reproduce itself.

I get it all the time. Some days I'll get it 10+ times. Most of the time it is a fellow forum membe listed in the spoofed from line.

I was getting a lot of them.

I wonder what sort of low life gets a thrill out doing this? I think they should be sent to prison when they can become "best friends" with a big hairy ape or a giant shaved gorilla. They should have done to them what they have been trying to do to my computer.

Thanks all, and you Mac guys have it pretty good with this problem. I guess it's Wintel only. After posting this morning, I looked at the report log from my firewall, and it has intercepted intercepting a ton of unwanted traffic (mostly probes and packet fragments), so I did a little snooping and found a few offending addresses. Interestingly, each time I enter one of the numeric addresses in the IE address bar, I get klez'd by the offending site. It can't get to my box, but it sure seems to be a busy worm. I wonder how much unnecessary network traffic it is responsible for. Greg, many of mine are from old email addresses of members. All I can say is "Wear protection". image

Edited to add - BigD, I think you're safe!

  • I get Klez all day (and some others, too). Fortunately, I use a web browser for mail when I'm using Windows.

At home (even as we "speak") I use a Mac with OSX. I just hit delete on all these guys. No issues image

  • For all you Windoze users....you MUST have anti virus software(I recommend Norton Anti-Virus) Symantec Norton Anti-Virus...Windoze is used in 90% of all computers and is the main target for inflicting virii.....thus making it extremely vulnerable.....also, at least once a week go to:

    Windows Update

  • What is the deal here? I have a cabel modem, I'm running Windows ME, I'm online 2-3 Hours a day, plus more on weekends, and I never ever get any of this stuff.

Must be because when I first bought this PC, the first thing I did was to uninstall the Virus program that was on it!

Yes, I get junk emails through my AOL, but viruses? Never. Never.imageimageimageimage

  • MartyF, I swear I am not and have for 2-3 years not ever ran a virus scanner on this PC and have not had any virus or other "bad" program that I am aware of. People keep telling me I have probably got some, but I just don't know it yet, but I doubt many virus programs idle for over 2 years! And as I said, I spend a lot of time on the Internet; on ebay, pcgs.com, news sites, yahoo finance, sports sites, etc.

  • JJacks, that's great.....I'm glad to hear that.....but I seriously doubt that running a Windoze machine for 2-3 years and not acquiring a virus is even remotely possible...what ver of Windoze is that PC running anyway?

  • Windows ME. I don't know why it is impossible however. No problems here. I have built a feedback of over 200 on ebay. I have entered Reg sets, downloaded tons of files, games, music, etc. No problems. Maybe I'm the only one. I did have my MCP for a while, but let it go recently, but I don't think that helped me alot anyway!

  • I haven't encountered that virus. I use mostly web based email and don't even open the outlook program. I did get a JSNO CLOSE trojan program recently that came from some website. Its main function is to open a window that can't be maximized or closed. It is the sponsor's way of continually sending ads to your PC without you knowing it and making commissions. Nasty trick used by some advertisers. I got rid of it using the antivirus program.
