I don't know what your motivation is, so I can only offer MY perspective on this coin. First let me say that the carbon spot just prior to "EPU" looks like it may be etched into the coin and there appears to be another on the reverse. That aside, I find that some of the 8tf Morgans exhibit some very dramatic doubling and/or engraver touch-ups more identifiable on uncirculated specimens. For that reason alone I would suggest looking for an uncirculated coin. If none of these things excite you, then maybe this is the coin for you, however, the areas I mentioned could quite possibly be damage and may preclude encapsulation, if that is a consideration.
Gilbert, Thanks for your input! Being a newbie I'm still trying to learn what is a good deal. I would like to own one of these 8TF coins but most of them in MS are out of my price range. If this is a reasonably good coin I would like to bid on it.
The return policy looks good. The coin looks OK, too. Definite AU-50. Thumbprint near date on star to right of last digit. Rim dings. Overall I think it looks like a nice coin for the grade.
The more I look at that scan, the less I like the coin. It looks thumbed. Notice how the toning doesn't meet the central device, somewhat like a shadow around the central device. I think the coin is damaged, but again, whether it is a deal or not depends solely on why you want it. If you are looking for a inexpensive but unproblematic coin, then I don't think this is it.
Do you just want a Morgan dollar? an 1878? 8tf? Problem free? AU? These are all considerations as to whether this is a good deal or not.
Maybe some others will comment on the condition of the coin.
To me, it's too hard to tell whether the coin has been thumbed. Wouldn't be worth it unless it was mint state, though. The pic needs to be bigger and sharper to see some of those alterations.
