What if the PCGS graded Walkers with a FH designation?

I've heard it argued that the major grading companies should grade strike on Walking Liberty Halfs. If a "Full Hand" designation was to come about, which Walkers would be toughest to find in FH?

  • Walkers have strange strike problems. I've seen ones with a full hand but the head is flat. Then I've had others where the center is sturck well -Full head and hand, but the motto and skirt likes are weak. To me, a full hand on the holder means little since it can have other important strike problems.

The 1940-S has the weakest center. Most are completely flat in the center with much of the design missing. The 1920-S is also a tough one.
  • Thanks heavycopper,

I think that if the PCGS was to give such a designation, the coin would have to be well struck throughout. Any weakness in strike would preclude the grade.
  • It would make good business sense for PCGS to do this.

Rather an Early Die State (EDS) designation that would always include the Full Hands or for that matter F Bands, F steps, F liberty lines. Something like an "EDS" as the designation. But the problem with this may be a time factor. With the thousands of coins they grade, is it pauseable
or feaseable to do so. Full step Jeffersons caught on with the help of the PAK club started by
the original pakman Adoph Weiss and the help of Richard and Susan Sisti. I do not know who
may have backed the full band Mercury dimes or the full bell line Franklin designations. Are there FH WLHD collections out there in the grassroots waiting for recognition from PCGS and other grading companies? I'm very certain that astute WLHD collectors pay particular close attention to these very aspects of their coins.

Yes, it would be great if they did.
