1999 Silver Proof Set.. why so much?

lsicalsica Posts: 1,580 ✭✭✭✭
Why is the 1999 Silver Proof set going for so much? (>$130 when I last checked)

99 Silver PS on Ebay

Is the mintage particularly low compared to the other 9 and 10 piece sets (the 2000 and the 2001)?

Philately will get you nowhere....

Jeez, that's still a lot. I was looking for one to complete my Silver State Quarters set, but I think I'll pass at that price.

Remember when '73 Brown Ikes were going for $100-$125 ;-)

    Supply and demand.

Maybe in 30 years they will be at melt like the silver Ikes.
The most money I made are on coins I haven't sold.

    Got quoins?
  • More people want them than are selling.

I wouldn't hold on to these if I had any. Maybe the Mint will start selling them again.

I have a nephew born in 1999. And bought some coins for his birthyear. I too wondered why so much. As other people stated probably because 1st year of state quarters and also the year 2000 coming up next.

  • I think at least 25,000 of these have been slabbed

  • Oh My!! I missed out on another "rare" find. And lost it to a guy with 0 feedback. I'm really slipping. Shouldn't have wasted my money on those proof seated quarters, they'll never be rare like this.image

Anyone care to gamble on a futures contract. I'll sell you 100 of these in 10 years at that price. Lock it in now, payment and delivery in Sept 2012.

  • The state quarter program has brought new collectors to the hobby, and these new collectors are caught up in the hype of state quarter collections. A four year collection of P-D-S-S silver is fetching over $300.00. COnsidering the low mintage, and the number of new collectors who continue to get started late, they may continue to buy these at any price for the sake of completing this collection.

Let's see. "7" 90% silver coins each with a mintage about 40% lower than
the '73 Ike. 117,000,000 collectors for "5" of the coins in the set compared
to maybe 100,000 for the Ike. And the Ike got up to about $180! Looks like
someones sticking his neck pretty far out if he finds a taker.

  • Geez......... $100 more than I originally paid from the mint......... almost 400% increase in only three years.......... why did I only buy 5 sets???? image
    ahhhh....... SODO MELVIN?????
  • Boy, sure wish I'd bought more than one set myself, hindsight is always 100%.

  • The funny part of the current price levels, is that you can go out and buy all the coins in PCGS PR-69 DCAM for the price of the RAW Proof Set, plus grading fees, plus insured shipping there and back to PCGS. However, with the already Certified coins, there is NO risk regarding the grade! It is an absolute no brainer!

I have been looking at eBay for the past week or two and the silver 1999 quarters in pcgs pr69 dcam flag have been going for about $33-$34ea. Dhrc has had some sets of the 5 1999 pcgs flag holder quarters on eBay for a start price of $155- bin $164.50.
I agree that getting the coins already graded is more economical if you plan to have them slabbed anyway but if you know where I could get all the coins in the 1999 set already graded pcgs pr69dcam for $133 please let me know.

For some reason dhrc sells the 2000 5 coin pcgs flag set for less than any other year so far, that one is about $84 bin.

Placid, they have been selling on Teletrade, not the flag ones for less than that or you can buy the individual ones on Teletrade for a total of less than that too. You just have to keep your eyes peeled. $130 is the highest price I have seen on ebay for the 1999 set. I purchased the silver quarters for $110 in NGC holders 69 Dcam.
  • I guess I got lucky.I got 3 sets for $65.00 in 2000.FROM A COIN SHOP IN CLEARWATER FLA LOCATED IN THE MIDDLE OF SEARS DEPT STORE.
I also was lucky enough to get 3 sets of silver .25's PR69ULTRACAM for $69.00 off of ebay .

The relatively low mintage helps. And first year of issue is always a little cooler than the 7th year in some cases. And you have to have it in order to have a complete set.
  • On a related topic it looks like the 2001 Silver Proof set is going to be a good one too. Right now wholesale is $45 but I bet in a few months they will be $65 or more. The 2000 silver set is a dog. I think what happened is all the people who lost money on the 2000 sets didn't buy the 2001 sets. Now those people are going to get the 2002 sets and they will be common. Then they won't buy the 2003 set and they will be good. Kind of like some wines. Odd years good--even years not as good. Or is it the other way around?

Now that would be nice as I purchased 10 for my daughters birth set.Back when you ordered online there was no shipping charge.
