What's your opinion on the subtlely of this auction?

braddickbraddick Posts: 23,965 ✭✭✭✭✭
Notice the auction banner states its an "NGC MS67" 1967 Kennedy. No where does it state it's an SMS other than the scan of the holdered coin (hard to read too). Also, no where in the body of the text of the auction description does he tell you either that it's an SMS.
Now, check out the "pricetag" on the reverse of the slab. That $225.00 price is way out of line for an SMS but would be about right for a regular business strike Kennedy (in NGC MS67).
Do you think this seller did all this on purpose?
If so, he's not succeeding, based on the price so far.

But it is an interesting ploy to attract the unknowing to possibly bid.

  • Welllll... y'know... if it weren't ebay, I'd say maybe that's hoping for a rube, but I'm virtually certain it MUST be something that was just overlooked. image

What $225 price? Started at $12.50, currently at $25.55.

EDIT: OOPS, now I see it. The tag on the coin. Yep, this seller is being "deceptive". (Is that better, Karl?).

it'd be a really stupid ruse. all the plastic people i know look at the plastic label 1st and the coin 2nd. so they would see the "sms" thing right off the bat.

Are you wanting the coin? If so, send him a message asking for clarification. Also, ask about a return privilege. If you get the answer you want, save the e-mail AND print a copy. You are then pretty safe to bid. As a bit of precaution, if you win the coin, let him know what you expect and what you have in your hot little hand. Why is it so many of you let your paranoia and pessimism keep you from simply asking a seller for a clarification. Is it more fun to hold him/her up for ridicule?? I have ALWAYS found a seller willing to make a clarification. Or if he doesn't respond, then I stay away from his auctions. Why assume the worst without trying for a clarification????????????

    DcamFranklin:
I'm sorry you misunderstood my intention of this thread.
    FACT:
1- The coin in the scan is an SMS. NGC 1967 Kennedy (SMS), not a business strike.
2- The coin in the auction banner, and later listed twice in the auction body/description is a business strike MS (not SMS) NGC 1967 MS67 Kennedy.
3- The "price sticker" on the back of the NGC slab -$225.00- is not in line with an SMS Kennedy but would be valid on a business strike.

4- I'm pointing out the possible subtely here and asking the QUESTION (NOT stating a FACT): "Do you think this seller did all this on purpose?"
A question that is appropriate to this forum as many have had much more contact with eBay than I have and would be able to contribute an opinion or thought that had not occurred to me.
    Kind of like you post.

But, to be even more direct- no, I'm not interested in the coin. Please, if you are, feel free to bid away.

i'd say he did it on purpose, but that it matters totaly not at all. for the reasons stated above.

    1) Yes, he did it on purpose and knew exactly what he was doing.
    2) I always laugh when I see a price tag on a coin being auctioned on eBay (that is intentional too).
    3) As you pointed-out it's not working.
    4) If you ask for clarification, I bet he doesn't respond or provides an ambiguious response.

the point is that it don't matter one freaking iota. walk on any used-car lot and look at the sticker prices. after you get done laughing, ask the guy in the leisure suit & snakeskin boots what the real price is, etc. ask him how the car runs. ask him why the little old lady who owned it sold it. etc etc.

    same thing going on here.

Could it be that the scan is wrong and he didn't look it over? Why would he blow up the image... they could look similar...

For example, say he saves files with the jist of their contents (ngc-jfk-67.jpg, for example) Maybe he added a 1 and 2, etc after the 67 to each 67 that he sells. Could he have forgotten which one was thr right scan? I guess the $225 could be a problem...

I looked through his feedback and he sells enough coins to know the difference. He also could have used the label on the slab exactly in his auction title. The price tag is probably a ruse. I've seen them plenty of times on coins I've got for far less than sticker. I just ignore the sticker. As long as the selling price is reasonable for SMS, no harm done. Fortunately, for most of us who would look for a MS 67 50C, we can generally tell the difference between SMS and a business strike.

Whoa big guy. Too much coffee this morning? I know the facts. I just think it is appropriate to give the seller the opportunity to fix any flaws on his auction. A brief note gives him/her the opportunity to correct matters or clarify the situation.

You refer to my post about the Silver Eagle. The above is exactly what I did. Before I posted to this Forum, I sent the seller the correct Population numbers and told him I had seen way too many of his auctions go by the past 3 months with incorrect Population numbers. I told him now that the current Population was 48% greater than he stated in the auction, it was certainly time to correct matters. That has been done.
