I don't care if it's A.J. Foyt driving that car.

Now don't get me wrong, I love Indy racing but it just seems wrong having a car on a state quarter. Surely Indiana has something more going for it than the 500? (The car is cool though)image

We've got a lot more going for this fine state besides some dumb peaches. But you see what ended up on our quarter. I suppose we are "The Peach State" to the rest of the country- I guess they go with what a state is most recognized for, even if it is racecars or fruit.

Peaches don't even grow in this part of the state.

We got the Statue of Liberty AGAIN on our quarter. Downstaters love to deny the existance of anything above the Hudson delta. The Battle of Saratoga, one of the finalist designs, would have been wonderful, but our 'Governor' choose that statue. Don't we already have a coin with that on? I like the Statute of Liberty and have even been up it. But something different would have been nice.

hmmm, I wonder if ours here in Oregon will end up being a depiction of clear-cuts...image

Well, as a Hoosier by birth, I am deeply offended ... perhaps you would have preferred the design with the basketball player? image
  • As a hoosier and still here in this state. There were some very good designs for the state quarter. The best IMHO would have been the one with a likness of chief little turtle. The first indian to unify the miami indiana tribes and the chief to sign a peace treaty with the us government. And as a matter fact he is buried here in my town of Fort Wayne.Anthony Wayne my towns name sake was the general sent out here to keep the british from establishing forts here in Indiana also to bring the indians under control he fought under the first president of the country yes George Washington. But i digress.

Ya i feel the race care sucks thats something that only takes place on 1 day of the year then does anybody think of Indiana after the 500 nope. Not even us Hoosiers think of this state after the 500

i'm a buckeye and i'm glad that ohio did something that related to aviation. another good theme, and i don't even know if it was considered, would have been a tie in with inventors. the aviation theme is good cause of the past with the wright brothers and all the current involvement the state has with NASA.
ironically, i've never been to Wright Patterson AFB where the aviation museum is located.

with the state quarter program moving westward now i think there will be more designs reminiscent of classic coinage. at least i hope there will be.

Agreed, Byron ... I thought of a beautiful design concept for Indiana that would have meshed perfectly with the Crossroads of the Nation concept, but never saw it among the suggestions ... A covered bridge, ala Parke County, the covered bridge capital of the nation, framed by trees (emblematic of Brown County's fall foilage) over a placid Wabash ... would have sent a more-significant message and a beautiful one, I think. People do not think of scenery when envisioning Indiana, but there sure is plenty!

And, Keets, as a current Buckeye, the trip to U.S. Air Force Museum at Wright Pat AFB is well worth the trip! Give yourself most of a day so you don't have to rush and can soak it in. As a WW II aviation buff -- and who once flew in an Indiana Air National Guard Vietnam-era F-101 jet fighter (now that is flying!) -- it is a wonderful experience! Combine it with a long weekend to the Cincy area (where I lived for nine years), where I can recommend more great diversions ... Ohio had a finalist featuring inventors (the National Inventors Hall of Fame is in Akron), but it did not fly. It featured an Edison light bulb and he indeed was born in Milan, Ohio, but all of his wizardy came at Menlo Park, MI...

edison on the coin would have been a fitting design in and of itself. talk about a guy who had ideas!!!! i once read a quote attributed to him where he said he has at least one good idea every day and several each year that are really usefull. i wonder if he ever slept.

  • Now here's an idea...they should leave the reverse blank (except for the state name) and install a bunch of metal stamping machnies (like those elongated penny machines) along the Indie highway system. The machines, which would all be computer design assisted, would allow the user (for a nominal fee) to design his/her own reverse or choose from a set of preselected state sponsored designs. Not only would it drive up tourist traffic to a state that probably doesn't see much but it would result in a whole new branch of the hobby being created. Almost like a 'token' spinoff. PCGS would have a field day with all the design varations and stiking issues...this one's off center, this one's a one of a kind, great strike, poor strike, hey look, here's one with aunt Mae. Just think of the extra state revenue...if only 25% of a billion blank reverses wind up getting stamped at $.25 (additional each) that's $62.5 mil (my match correct?). Out of staters who don't wish to drive there could mail their coins to a clearinghouse to get stamped. Then every other state could follow suit...just think of the posibilities...
It's the "hunt" that makes this such a great hobby...
  • Oh man!! I just saw that Indiana coin a few days ago, and couldn't believe it. A racing car?!! I haven't been looking at the new state quarters like I used to. I'm not even sure what the new 2002 quarters are. I think some states just don't have anything to put on their coins.

Indiana and Hoosiers have a great deal to be proud of (It is the best state), but the Indiana
quarter is not one of them.
