An example of why it's worth sticking around here

A while back IrishMike posted about the finest known 1959-D Lincoln MPM-001 (misplaced mintmark in last 9 of date) he purchased at his local monthly coinshow. I mentioned it sounded like a cool variety and would love to see it someday.

Today a package arrived at my doorstep that contained a green T-shirt with IrishMike's "ND" icon on the front (must be some local football team out there) wrapped around an envelope. Inside was a 2X2 containing a mint red Lincoln cent of the same variety.

Not your run of the mill MPM, complete with the die chip to the right of the 9 Mike mentioned all of these have. I love it, and it's one of many good reasons why it's worth sticking around here.

Just one of many reasons why its worth sticking around.

The knowledge available on this forum is invaluable. It has saved me countless hours of research and frustration.
  • Nice.

What are you using for lighting on that photo? I never could get any cent to show up that well in a digital image.

Oh man! that looks so familiar. Now I'm need to go dig up my rolls of 59's. Sure glad I sorted by date because I knew this type of thing would happen.

Need something designed and 3D printed?

Peter - it helped that this was a raw copper that I didn't have to shoot through plastic. I also recently splurged on a couple of these. I place them as close as possible, tilted down directly over the coin, and they give off a diffuse natural white light that brings out much of the copper color. I have a nicely toned RB Lincoln that I was able to capture for the first time with these lamps (and I've tried quite a few). One may actually be all you need. I'm sure the same type bulb could be found in a cheaper lamp, but they fold up nicely for travel which was important to me. They're great for just viewing coins as well.
  • That's fantastic!!!!! Congrats shylock, and way to go Irish Mike.

I've put one of these lights on my christmas list. What do they mean by, The ideal light to use with the specialized color guides. Does this light come with colorized lens or some kind of adjustment to the level of the fusion of light?

  • Shylock, I know you are going to be very busy while you are at Long Beach, but if it is at all possible can you stop by and see Heritage and especially Superior and offer them some tips on how to properly image coins? We internet bidders need some help.

Thanks. Mike certainly knows his copper.

It doesn't have any adjustments or lenses. I think they're refering to potential clients who need to match colors precisely, and this type of light makes that possible. The only additional info that came with it is about the developer (John Ott) and some other models they sell. May be worth contacting them directly (1-800-842-8848).

Edit: Toothpuller- Heritage knows how to take more accurate images, my icon is one of theirs! It's more a matter of priorities. And you're dead right about Mike knowing his coins.

Paul should start a coin photography business, because I sure can't get pix like that on copper. Silver is not so difficult. I too have ordered that light, but sounds like I need to spend more time experimenting with the white settings. What makes it so fun collecting those varieties is that they are so cheap and trying figure out something like that could happen. That is only a $4.50 coin. The t-shirt, well it's priceless. image As far as me knowing copper, not nearly as well as Paul and several others in here. That was my main motivation in joining the forum was to learn about it.

    ND?? Hmmm...image
There's a lot of great people on the board that do things like that. Darktone sent me 2 58-D cents last week; 1 a toned endroller and 1 that was a filled die that said E CENT instead of ONE CENT because he knew I did errors. More good than bad folk around here. image
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

I have purchased two Ott lights for my wife at the local sewing shop. One is similar to the one Paul (Shylock) illustrates in his link. The other is taller, about 3 feet tall, and clamps onto a desk. I guess sewers also use Ott lamps, but in opinion (freely offered because I know my wife will never read this thread) using these nice lights for sewing is crazy!

Great comment Dog97, sometimes we lose sight around here on how many great people are on this forum. ND hmmmm, that isn't the onl thing on that shirt, obverse says Return to Glory & Notre Dame Football 2002. Now the reverse of the shirt (got to keep this coin related), it pure artwork. Has the same obervse with the four horsemen in the background with Knute Rockne, and the golden helmet held up by a hand. And Rockne's famous speech: We're gonna GO, GO, GO, GO! And we aren't going to stop until we go over that goal line! And don't forget, men..Today's the day wee're gonna win" Go in their and fight, fight, fight...

Sigh, I can almost here the echos from on high. BTW the t-shirt was designed by ND student and alumni and the proceeds go to chairity. They also have a shirt for every game this year.ND bookstore link

I warned Paul, if he ever wears that tee, he wil be Irish forever.image
