i thought i saw something to that effect in NN the other day. it sounds like a good design change in the short term but not a lasting one. as much as i liked the ford mustang i wouldn't want to see it back in production!!image the nickel design changes they alluded to sound like they would get some hearty approval by the collecting community. a nice 3-4 year plan and then we can settle into a change for the next 25 years. that all sounds like a good future for my favorite denomination!

it's a freakin sad state of affairs when America can't come up with new designs for coins that actually have taste but w/out having to rely on the work & efforts of past artists. jeeeeezzz, are state quarters the best we can do???

    hey karl

if you consider the political involvement in the process and all the wrangling that goes on i'd say they accomplished alot with the quarter program. what the mint needs is someone like me to be their spokesman!! i would have no qualms whatsoever with going to congress and telling them to keep their opinions to themselves and stop trying to DELEGATE coin design. one of their own needs to step up to the plate and do exactly that.

A DCAM Buf! Maybe this will open up whole new avenues for transfer die counterfeits and date alterations! Yippee!!!
  • I felt the need to clarify some things here. First, the nickel gets four ANNUAL design changes, the four year sequence of nickel designs would start with the Louisiana Purchase bicentennial in '03, the Jefferson Peace medal in '04, an obverse/ reverse repro of the Lewis and Clark gold dollar design in '05 and a one year return of James Earl Frasers' Buffalo design in '06. The SAC dollar is being considered for the bird thing and the dime gets a change in '04, the half in'05 and the cent in '06.

We need a little imagination here, folks. BNE and I had talked of how fantastic it would be to have a nickel featuring Teddy Roosevelt on obverse portrait and then a reverse emblematic of his creation of our national park system, Yellowstone or something. Now, we're talking ...
  • Great... the mint gets to butcher another classic. File under: "At least its better than a dead President".image
