HELP ON A BUFFALO, PLEASE.

I haven't any experience with Buffalo nickels, and I don't really know why I bought this one. I mean, I liked the color and I think that's what hooked me, but they just aren't "my thing." Anyway...there are a few nicks, but only the one on the reverse, between the legs is noticeable to the naked eye. Can anyone out there give me some idea on what I might get from PCGS?

  • I'll guess MS63, maybe an outside at an MS64 but I am no expert either.
  • K-comics,
Thanks. That's pretty much what I figured, a 63. I am hoping that because of the strength of the strike it will go 64, but I've never submitted a Buffalo before.

  • It looks like a solid coin. Not particularly rare, but let us know how it grades out and good luck!!!
  • The 38-d's are almost always well struck. I would also agree with ms/63 from the scan. I don't think I would spend the submittal money on this coin. The coin is nice, but, in my opinion not worth having slabbed.

I wouldn't slab it... nice coin, but that is a high-end UNC that would probably go for $20-$30... I just got a 66 for $46 after s/h (it was a bargain, but that isn't the point)... the color on that makes the coin one that I would be proud to own, but I don't think it needs a plastic home right now (an airtight might not be a bad investment)

    GREAT BUY!

Hey! Be sure to check the D mm for any doubling or possibly an underlying S mm.

i would definitely not bother w/ plastic - 1938-d has got to be far and away the most common buff in high grade - making it the perfect type coin. i'd guess about 63 on yours.

  • Thanks to all you guys for your input. Ordinarily I would agree about not slabbing such a common date, but I'm putting a bunch of stuff together to send to PCGS and figured the extra $15 isn't that much to spend to protect the coin. I have no plans to resell, but we all know how that goes, and then the extra $15 would make a BIG difference.

Anyway...I think I will take your advice and put slabbing this coin on hold.

Oh...First thing I did was check the mintmark. Just a solid "D."

    Thanks again.
