If a large auction house called you...

and left you a message asking for any opinion on some coins someone wants to consign to them, would you give them advice for free or charge them a consultation fee. Would it matter if you were just giving them a quick opinion or if you were giving them a little more time, than lets say 5 or 10 minutes.

If anyone calls me for an opinion on just about anything i'm slightly flattered and I'll gladly offer an opinion or 2 or more. If it's someone making money off my opinion and they do it repeatedly i'd expect something in return.

One time.. two times.. no biggie.. more than that show me the money

  • I would answer. Now if it was often then maybe an arrangement could be made, but if this is the first time, I would help as best I could.

I would politely tell them what I tell everyone else that calls about such matters.

"We do not take take solicitations, respond to opinion polls, or provide free consulting services at this telephone number, and we gave at the office. We currently have a supply of moderately used Fresh Step cat litter available to sale; bye bye!"
  • i would tell them the price is very low like $50 per $200 and then buy 'em so they lose money and i can sell it for a uick profit... oh, wait that have a name for people like that... was it scum... no... i know it now it was a dealer image (if u are a dealer and i have offended you in anyway im sorry) image

If a large auction house, or a little one - or anybody for that matter - called me and asked for my opinion on coins, I'd tell them to please pass the joint.image

  • My consultation fees are $125 per hour with a four hour minimum.

If you wish my opinion, it's cash. In advance please. image

    Cdmead,

The problem with that is that when you offer your opinion, some people run away.image

  • Generally, in my line of work, I will provide all the consultation possible if you are a client. If not, then you should become my client. The only exception is questions from the media, but that falls under a different set of rules.
  • my opinions are always for sale. it's how i earn a living. i'm not giving it away, they're not giving it away and neither should you

  • I have had this type of experience (but it was with building networking software, not with coins.) The way I handled things was to look at the potential for future income/business/assets. If the potential for some future gain on relationship was nil, I would politely offer short-term opinion, then politely beg off from further consultation. If the client or organization is truly interested in establishing a relationship, I would then negotiate over the longer term for mutual gain.

Said differently, I would always begin my opinion with an assessment of relationship potential.
  • Hi Russ -

I was wondering if anyone would reference my opinions.

I would have to suggest if it causes you to run away, maybe you are getting your money's worth. image

  • to talk about coins... Anytime!

  • Consultation is just that....do you normally charge anyone for consultation? Are you an expert in your field? If so, then regardless of the inquiring party, tell them you would be happy to and the fees are XXX. I have been working in computers and networking for many years. I've designed and built some of the most advanced networks in the world, (if you would like me to support that, just ask). People are always asking my advise on PC's, networks, network design, etc. I always offer my advise within reasonable conversation. When detail becomes involved, most of the time it requires a consulting agreement. If someone wants true expertise in a particular field, than a fee is appropriate.....just my opinion....
