  • Hey Spooly,

I can't think of a worse group of collectors to bid against!!

Don't you mean "a worse group of collectors to snipe against!!!!

BTW, did you receive those high grade NGC Lincolns you sniped, er bid on last week? Any of them going to cross or are they for an NGC Set? Good luck, Dave

Actually, Spooly, it's been at least three or four days since I sniped you. What brought this on? image

Dpoole, That's not funny! I am now having flash backs of all the coins that "could have been" in my set, before you stomped me with a massive bid! image

Spooly, well if it makes you feel any better, I was going to bid on that NGC 36-S in 67RD that you won a week or two ago... until I saw you'd bid on it...

It wasnt something I HAD to have, though. I'd have fought you over it if I HAD to have it image.

I usually cloak myself in a coppery-zinc material and coordinate EBay's clock with the US atomic clock. I had a T3 piped right into my house for sniping at a 1000 yards . . . and I wait patiently until the last nanosecond . . . Tom Berringer would even be proud!

  • REALLY!!!

I BACKED OFF TO LET YOU GET SOME BIDS IN FOR YOUR COLLECTION.

and even tho we both quit early the darn coins still got expensive.
may the force be with you.

Lazeroo, I was shocked at how high some NGC Lincolns are getting! The sniper action on some of those coins... doubled and tripled the selling prices in the last seconds!

Yah, they climbed way up there. I costed some poor guy a SVDB in somewhere around F condition image.

  • I love these sniping discussions! IMHO, sniping is called winning! Does it matter if I'm willing to pay up to, say $500 for a piece when the current bid is $300? If I put my $500 bid in three days before the end of the auction and the auction bid (by others) only goes to $400, I win it! The same is true if I put my $500 bid in with 10 seconds left! Pray tell, effectively, what is the difference? In either case, I win for say, $410 (or what ever the minimum bid increment is).

Those who complain about sniping are just upset that they lost out in the last minute. If they lost out three days earlier, somehow it's less painful!!

I will admit however, that bidding in the last minue is fun!!! image

    Mike,

It doesn't work that way. What happens is, two people get into a mine is bigger than yours contest, and before they realize it, they have bid the price up higher than they originally were willing to go. Sniping stops that from happening.

  • Would anyone be in favor of a change in eBay or Teletrade auctions such that the close of an auction was postponed until 5 minutes had gone by without a bid? Heritage tired it a few months ago and gave it up. Anyone know why?

BTW, the only change I would vote for is "you can't end your eBay auctions in the middle of the night Eastern Time!" Those auctions (mostly run by insomniacs) really inhibit my sniping. image
  • Ebay can always just do:

This auction will end at 1:30am +/- 1 hour.

Just do not give the EXACT closing time and then people cannot snipe

    I love sniping discussions!

Doesn't the highest bidder still win??

Are you mad because you didn't get something for nothing??

The best reason to snipe is to keep people from following your bidding patterns - why give away your knowledge and homework?

Early bidding gives people the time and courage to work up another bid - sniping prevents them from overbidding (a point already made, I guess).

I can't see ANY downside to sniping so help me to understand the problem!!

  • Lakesammman - good post. I agree - if you know what you what to bid, then bid near the close. It should also be noted that snipers don't always win - they may not exceed someone's max bid or they are outsniped by another sniper, and don't have time to enter a new bid!

I love sniping! I just don't like sniping against you guys! image

I look at the bidder list after the auction.

    7 bidders..... I know 4 of them!image

  • I will reiterate my point - I can "snipe" an auction three days ahead of time by placing a bid which is "sky high" - Or, I can place the same bid with 1 minute left. Either way, I win - but if it's in the last minute, then I'm sniping?!?

Bottom line: I won the auction!

Snipers are actually more honest with their bids.

    1. Snipers figure out the highest they are willing to bid/pay and live or die by the decision. If non-snipers put in their "MAX" Bid, which is exactly why they call it a "MAX BID", and that bid is higher than the sniper enters at the last minute, the non-sniper wins.

    2. Non-snipers are hoping to get something for nothing.

Don't put LESS than your max bid in the "MAX BID" box, and expect any sympathy from me when I snipe you and you whine to your mommy.

    Aha! Mustangman7!

    I know you!

Proud to be a sniper, huh? You can dish it out, but apparently you can't take it, eh? image

Remember when I bid against you on a certain early Memorial in PR69 DCAM? Hmm? I think it was a 1964 that edinmass was selling. Oh, let's see... it would have been about October 9th of last year, according to my PM history. You PM'ed me a sob story about how you needed it for your set and I retracted my bid for you (there was time, since I usually don't snipe- I put in my best proxy bid and let the chips fall where they may). I didn't know you were a forum member when I outbid you. I ended up settling for a PR68 DCAM for my type set. Since I was only a type guy and you were a date set guy, I took pity.

    Sometimes I'm too nice. image

Darn Lincoln people. Oh well. They can keep their ol' Lincolns, anyway. Let 'em fight over 'em. I'll go for those classic type coins instead. (Not that there's anything wrong with Lincolns- I have a pickle jar full of 'em.)

It's OK, though- you don't have to worry about me anymore. I'm totally out of the modern coin game now. I like my cents a little bigger in diameter now. image

Edit: Wow... MudMan... my old troll archnemesis! Long time no see! Wassup, Muddy? How ya been? image

He wouldn't be MudMan if he didn't sling a little mud at you, Mustangman.

  • LordMarcovian,

Yes I do remember and truly Thanked You at the time the deal was made. You were very gracious and helped me out. I could not have Thanked You with more feeling. It was a selfless act and I will never forget it.

As far as me not being able to take it though. I can! Modman had put an angry face on his post and at the second that I read his reply it just took me off guard that he was angry at snipers simply because they snipe. I took it personally because whether to snipe or not, does not tell you anything about the character about a person. It is simply a bidding tool that is used to play the Ebay game. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose but it is still only a game.

I guess that I should just go back to staying away from the forum if I am going to make people unhappy.image

Sorry for wasting the space here!image

Aw, lighten up. MudMan is a troll, as everyone knows. I was just yankin' your chain a little. image

Still have that PR69 DCAM? I just sold my PR68 DCAM type coin (and took a beating). The only Registry set I have kept up is my small Gold Major Design set.
