When is a Coin no longer a "Coin"?

I stumbled across this auction and the thought occurred to me: When is a COIN no longer a Coin? Or, better phrased, Is everything that comes from the Mint a "coin"?

What I'd like to know is how they were able to decide that twisted hunk of metal is an MS63?

  • It's not a coin that for sure. How the heck do you grade something like that MS63?????? It could be anywear from a G4 to MS70 from what I can see. They even state it's a piece of metal left over after the planchets were created, so how is it a coin??????image I'll give them a $1 for the conversation piece.

    This is interesting:

<< <i>All Proof or Mint State 70 coins will not be returnable >>

Looks like this seller ran in to too many collectors who know that "70" is supposed to mean "perfect".

  • You know, I have been thinking hard about this slabbing phenomena, and I must say....it has it's positive sides....but this kind of dribble isn't one of them...from what I've read in these forums, PCGS, NGC and ANACS are the only grading services worth even considering when it comes to accurate grading, or slabbing for that matter....but this bit really pushes things over the edge....I think I'll stick to learning how to grade and keeping my raw coins that "look good to me" to myself......these slabbing companies really need to be put under some governed standards....it really is ridiculous...thanks for the post braddick, very interesting....especially for THIS newbie image
