What makes a 1979 Proof Set Ty 1 or Ty 2?

I obtained a 79 proof set from a person who told me it was a Type II. I asked if that meant cause of the SBA dollar. He said no, the Lincoln penney. Which is correct? If it's the penny, what makes the penney a Ty II vs a Ty I?

I believe that all coins in the 1979 proof set came in both filled s (just a blob) and clear (less of a blob, but not clear). However, the SBA is really the the choicest of the coins in type II. There is an obvious difference in type I and II S mintmarks on all of the coins. 1981 is a different subject altogether, I have a tough time telling the difference.

All six coins have to be a type II for the set to be considered at the prices given. The difference is that the type I s looks like a blob. The type II the mintmark is a clear and sharp s. The dollar is the most desirable coin in the set.

If it is nice, a T2 1979 Lincoln in a PCGS slab will bring nice money---$100+
Editted to add that is a PR69DCAM price.

  • Ok, got it. Thanks. On all 6 coins, the bottom of the "S" is not bad. On 5 of the coins, the TOP of the "S" is filled in pretty much. However, the Lincoln cent's "S" is absolutely crystal clear - deep shadow like the bottom part. I'm not a lincoln expert, but it's at least a cameo - perhaps a dcam. Sounds like you suggest I should submit it. Again, not being a penney guy, which service will give the best return on the slabbing investment?

Near the bottom of this website on SBA varieties are good pictures and descriptions of the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 varieites of 1979-S and 1981-S coins.

  • Generally speaking only the SBA brings a significant premium, but the cent in PR69DCAM is an exception since there are usually spots or something to keep it from that grade.

Last PCGS PR69DCAM Ty2 cent I sold went for $130 or so.

But, if you only make PR68 you're probably lucky to break even unless you're submitting with a bunch of other coins to spread the cost around.

Not sure what current pricing is, though.
