2001 Topps Heritage Red Ink Autograph of Willie Mays 1/1?

Was wondering if anyone knew anything about this Mays. Would it be fair to offer it as a 1/1 and what would a fair BV be for it, since the other red ones are $450?

I collected this set so I know quite a bit about the history of these cards. Topps put 52 of
each of the red autographs in 2001 heritage packs including 52 hand numbered red
Willie Mays cards. A few months or so later they had to come up with a suitable replacment
for the Eddie Mathews autograph redemption card. If you recall Mathews died before the
release. Well topps and their brainpower came up with and idea for a replacment....a
Willie Mays heritage autograph signed in red! Except this one, wasn't hand numbered!

You are smart- you can see the prob with this! At the time of the release the real Mays
red autos were booking at 800.00, now topps decided to put out a bunch of red
un-numbered ones in exchange for a Mathews that would of booked far less then
800 bucks! For once topps gave collectors something better!...way better!

but now you have un-numbered cards out there that are ready for "home numbering" projects!
Im sure there were many people who thought that they could make a little extra cash by
numbering these 20/52, 1/52 or 52/52......topps, of course didn't think of this!

In my opinion, the un-numbered Mays are actually worth far less than these....no telling
how many were released. This card however is not a 1/1!!

    Good Luck

  • Yes agree with Kevin, the Mays in all numberings are diminished in value due to this crazy Topps idea, then they have the nerve to say....Oh it may have been stuck to another card, amazing how they don't even know what they did. Probably because the turnover rate is so large that the people around then are long gone. It is still a nice Mays auto, but who knows how many made the market. It is sad that the companies put out these nice products and then hand number them to begin with allowing for fraudulent use of the products, for example how hard is it to make a hand numbered Marino #3/25 into a jersey #13/25. Some day the companies will learn.
