Odd penny, any ideas?

I found this odd 1985-D penny last week in change. It seems like the top of the obverse has a really sharp rim, and the whole coin seems to be struck in a high relief. I am attaching some pictures that might show what I am talking about. What could cause this? Is this an error or just some odd strike?

  • The dies were set too close together. This causes excess pressure and creates a "wire rim". The pressure is great enough to force metal into the space between the die and collar. Generally this is only on a small area of the coin, rather than all the way around.

Also casused by an overthick planchet or stretched collar. Severe cases are called finning.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • Thanks guys! I learned something new today, and who says finding stuff in change isn't fun and educational!
