POLL:PCGS/NGC-67-69 (2002 ) Sac dollars. SCARCE?????

POLL: 2002 Sac dollars PCGS/NGC-67-69 average price on Ebay $10-30 a piece.

A bargain??? YES!!!!!

reason: ruthless mishandling by the mint.
tarnish and spots.
projected low mintage
possible elimination of series.

Who agrees?
Brian.

P.S ( I don't have any consigned. But I have purchased many)

  • Although I'll agree with you that the mint has been issuing pretty shoddy examples via mintsets, I can't see an increase of that size given a 3-6 million projected mintage. Perhaps in a few years the prices will stabilize, provided the series continues. Right now it's anybody's guess given that it's not circulating as the government hoped it would.

I've put away quite a few spot-free examples in MS65+ (all out of mint sets, had them slabbed myself.) Not sure it's worth buying pop tops tho, they don't seem very popular at the moment. Probably won't even open the box they're in for 10 years, but you never know image It's not like I'm betting the farm, just wanted to stash some nice ones away.

I agree with what you both said. ,but I have a feeling they are really tough at the 67+ level.
    What do you guys think?

    Brian.
  • Bought the full series including proofs for bout $30.00. Most would grade about 65-67. Putting then away for my kids.

If you're trying to pull 67's out of rolls, forget about it. Don't think 67's are really that hard to find in mint sets tho, 66 is probably the average.

You're right, pulling 67's out of rolls is hopeless. I would rather buy the ones that are already
    graded.

  • Any time that you can pick up a few high grade examples relatively cheap and can live with a drop in price should one occur then go for it. Im reminded of the sharp spike in high grade commemoratives this year and the tumble that they took soon after all the dealers started flooding the market with them. As for me, I'm concentrating on trying to find top grade examples of moderns either from circulation or from mint sets.

This weekend there was a small coin show here in town - one of the dealers had a box full of coins from cut up mint sets still in the celophane cells, so I cherry picked about 25 of them for a very reasonable price - I won't get rich doing this - but at least I have better Kennedy's for my registry set now that I've started a second one.

Let us know how they comeback.

    Brian.
  • Show me where your buying MS68-69 Sacs for $30, I will take every one of them you have.
  • critocrito Posts: 1,735
problem is, at current prices, they're not really worth sending in, so don't be fooled by the pops. could be much more common in the higher grades than people think.

I have bought 67's at that range. I do not have any higher than that. Obviously they
are more expensive. Have you purchased any on Ebay, if so , what is the range that they are going
    for?

I have not purchased any 67 or higher. I purchased 67's for around $30, Obviously the
68+ are going for much higher. I am assuming around $50-100.

    Brian.
  • Around $85 for the 2002-P in MS68, haven't been looking for the D-mint, but have saw the 2002-D's going between $25-30.
  • wingedlibertywingedliberty Posts: 4,805 ✭✭✭
I had no idea that the P's were up that high. Obviously they are seriously mishandled at Philly.
If you consider the bins, the bags, the pure attrition that they go through. , not to mention the spots,
A 68 is worth the money.

The 2001-d in MS68 seems popular.

    $1776.01 reserve not met.

    Holy Cow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!image
  • The 2001-D is the toughest of all the business strikes. I settled for a nice clean MS66 personally, as many of moderns that I have, I can't justify that price while my MS66 looks great to me.

Wingedliberty, the the 2000-P isn't too bad pricewise in MS68 either I believe, right around $100, but a nice set(or two or three as it sounds in your case) is nearly as nice and they can be had for $30 or less each as you noted(not counting the Millenium, which I picked up in MS66, and the Goodacre, which I will never buy as long as it remains so pricey)

the pop report shows 695 2002-P's graded with 138 in MS68. Even with the pop 4/0 2001-D linked, out of the 595 graded 384 are MS66 and higher. I wonder how much someone would pay for a 69 tho image

What are the pops for the ms 2002-d?
Would the d's be harder because most of the higher grade coins are from mint sets?
Are the mint sets put together in phily and if so wouldn't the d's have to be handled and shipped before going into the sets?
  • Ive returned roll after roll of the Ps, so was I surprized when the ones in two of three sets were 68s, maybe even a 69, I only see minute hairlines on rim!
