Do any of you have kids stuffing whitmans?

Not that the question isn't interesting enough by itself, but I seem to have accumulated tons of pieces of mint and proof sets, and before I list my grandmother's hoard, I thought there might be something maybe all of us who wished to could try. I currently have probably 500 mint and proof coins still in cello that I would offer at face to a new kid collector (1960-2002) of various denominations, but I just can't figure out what the best way to find suitable recipients is. Any ideas? Please note that these coins are all picked through, and there are no MS67s or full steps or cameos, or no S, just decent coins. Anyway, you get the idea. There is some silver, a few MS63 Ikes, SBA's, a proof Franklin, a few silver coins, and no junk. I am not interested in selling them, but will charge only face value and shipping ($5). How could we do this?

    KK,

What I was thinking is that many of us might have such coins. I'm just wondering if there are any young collector clubs or the like that could benefit. I have a mixed box of stuff, but really I wasn't trying to sell them here, I was hunting ideas.

BTW - If you need any, just send me a PM and I'll pull what I have out for you (No Charge).

  • Don:

A possibility that comes to mind is maybe giving some to scout packs. I think one of their badges is for coin collecting, maybe you can arrange to donate some of these coins to scout leaders for this purpose with maybe some sort of literature from the mint and at the same time you might be able to write some of it off at tax time.

Instead of trying to "fill orders", you could do a grab bag sale. Have the kid collectors that are interested PM you. Divide what you are selling into piles equal to number of young collectors that have PM'd you and letting them know the final cost. (Face value + $5 S/H) My 12 year old daughter would be thrilled to be going through something like that. I feel that if you try to fill orders, you could be overwelmed searching thru everything. Make it easy on yourself and make it fun for the kids. They can have their own little "treasure trove" to seach through and if they don't need it in their Whitman, use in for trading purposes. I'd like to add that this is a most generous offer and an excellent lesson for the young collectors here. Hopefully someday, they too, will share with their collections with the new collectors who will follow behind them.
  • Scouts would be a good idea dont ask me why they get a patch for coin collecting, but i guess it creates some new collectors. but... im not sure they would apprediate some coins (nickels, pennies, other coins used today) even though they are proof if i were a 8 year old scout that got say 3 silver quarters or a few silver dimes i would spend them... an ike or a franklin would make an 8 year old happy but we would need lots of them.

  • Don,

Here is another program that lives off of donations: Coins for A's. Again, they use donations to reward students while encouraging numismatics. I've sent them things in the past.

If you're not looking for taking a charitable donation, perhaps we could take up a collection here to assist with shipping/costs. Dave
  • Great idea Dave - love the concept of rewarding students for their efforts!

  • not sure about coins for A's why should u have to be very smart to enjoy numismatics. what about children that havent had good schooling shouldnt they be able to recieve a coin? or mentally challenged children? image

Thank you all for the good suggestions. I like Dave and MrLee's ideas alot. I will divide the coins into 10 lots, and will charge a total of $2 apiece (including shipping). if you have kids that have an interest, just PM me. I will ship them to the 1st 10 PM's. My PM doesn't work from home, so I'll have to respond tomorrow from work. Have them send payment after they get their coins to my return address. Any unsold lots will go to Dave's recommended charity. image

There are 316 coins in this lot, 94 MS pennies, 66 MS nickels, 75 MS dimes, 10 MS Quarters, 7 MS Kennedies, 3 MS Ikes, 2 MS SBAs, 22 PR pennies, 11 PR nickels, 13 PR dimes, 12 PR Quarters, and 1 PR Franklin. There is some silver, and about $27 face value. I will try to divide it evenly so no one is disappointed. Please, kids only. Thanks guys for the ideas.

That's OK KlecterKid, my wife thinks that too when I get coins.

BrianJr - you are first, but PM where to send the coins.

MrLee - Would you do the same for your daughter if you're so inclined (I've reserved one for you since it's your idea)

    Don,

I think what you want to do is great.

I like the ``Coins for Grades'' idea, but think it may be best if you do this at a poorer school district. Also, you can use this as a rewards program for kids in the hospital: as a way for them to work harder on their rehab or even just to smile. Once again, a county hospital or one in a poorer neighborhood is better.

And, if you're still considering the Scouts, I think you should consider the Girl Scouts of America.

    And KK, I will.

BTW - Don't send payment. Just send back the $2 to the return address on the package.
