ICG on HSN

I was just flipping thru the channels and came across the Home Shopping Nertwork. They have a 2002 $50 Gold Eagle graded by ICG as MS70. They showed a close up of the coin. Even I could see scratches on the coin. How could ICG rate this as a MS70 with visible marks?? No wonder why I stick to NGC and PCGS. They are now comparing this 2002 to the 1933 double eagle and to the 1909S-VDB cent. Gimme a break. I need another beer after seeing this.

  • I saw that as well.

And it available for the bargain price of $659.00! image

I enjoy listening to the very very carefully worded descriptions on these shows.

They are throwing around a new "stat" which claims only one in one billion of the coins every made is graded MS70.

I would like to see the research on that one!

It does not surprise me, half of all modern coins(post 64) are graded either proof 70 or MS70 by ICG.
To ICG an MS70 does not have to be perfect. I now consider ICG one notch above ACG. ANACS and
PCI are trading higher in moderns. Stay away from ICG.

HAHA. About a month ago I say they hawking a MS70 $50 Eagle. The coin clearly had marks on it. The saddest part was when they started talking about it being the key date to the series.

I agree. I have NGC MS70 gold eagles in my collection. I cannot see a single blemish under 10x.
I looked at some ICG "so called" 70's in dealers cases. NGC,PCGS would not grade them above 68.
There is of course a market for ICG-70 material, one should pay 67 money for it at best.

  • just today, my coin shop asked if I was interested in a 1999 1/4 Gold Eagle IGC MS69. He wanted $85.00, which is very slightly above melt. I looked at the coin and it was pure trash. I have a number of these in various dates and every one I own looked significantly better than this MS 69.

The dealer beat me to teh punch on knocking the grading, one of the many reasons I so enjoy buying there.
