Thanks for thinkin' of me. I already have just about all the Seated silver I need, unless it happens to be a 20c piece or an exceptionally engraved love token. Right now gold for my hat is mostly what I'm after.
The coins on the vest and hat are all pre-1900 and with "contemporary" holes; i.e.
I do not drill any myself, as that would be "cheating". image

PS- the half dime in the lower right hand side of the picture in that auction appears to be counterstamped. I wonder what it says...

  • LM got me to do a baseball hat. I've got that filled for now. It was pretty fun to do! I'll be wearing it at Long Beach so look out for me.

LM, I see you've got yourself a hat to go with your vest. Snazzy!

Carl- maybe you ought to give that auction a peek. The price was not outrageous (at least, in my opinion- and everyone knows I am the "market maker" for holeys, LOL)

It looks like a decent batch of holed coins. I just happen to have too many Seated dimes, half dimes and Shield nickels. That counterstamped half dime is intriguing, though- I like counterstamps sometimes. The Trade dollar on my vest is an EF-AU example which is counterstamped on the reverse with someone's initials. Some of the coins counterstamped with a merchant's name might have value as tokens, rather than coins, just as love tokens are judged by their engraving, not by the coin itself.

I just added an 1898 Barber dime love token to the vest. The work is not exceptional, but Barber coins seem to be a bit scarcer as love tokens than their Seated counterparts are (if only because the Seated coins were made longer).

Yes, I just added the Holey Gold Hat. It is presently all gold from the 1770's to the mid 1800's. There is a 1789 British half guinea and an 1834 US $2.50 Classic on there, among other things.

    LordMarcovan,

Spinaker showed me a holed two-cent piece the other day that made me think of your vest. If you chat with him, he also showed me a British copper that had hints of electric blue toning in an NGC holder that may have been the prettiest coin I've ever seen. Make him give you a look. It's world class.image

    Rob:

What are the ruins in the background of your picture? Is that part of the old plantation or slave house that is near the North West part of St. Simons? I forget the name of the location, but I always thought it "quasi-private." So when we were sight seeing there, we didn't get out of the car for long because I worried that we would be challenged and sent packing.

Great look, LM! Does it travel well (at least through airport screening these days?) image

Mark- those are the ruins of the slave hospital at Retreat Plantation. The
Sea Island Golf Club was built on the plantation site in 1928, and is the home of the new Lodge At Sea Island Golf Club, a 42-room, 5-Diamond resort, which is my workplace (in fact, I'm there now). The "Sea Island" Golf Club is something of a misnomer, as it is on Saint Simons Island, not Sea Island.

The site is at the southern tip of Saint Simons, just south of Frederica Road and McKinnon airport. It's at the end of the Avenue of Oaks that were planted during the plantation era. You can look directly across the sound here from the Lodge and see Jekyll Island.
