Found 3 Large Cents today :) Pic added

I was helping a friend who is restoring a "Century" Home today. We were removing some of the plaster on a wall, not very much fun. When we finished one section, and were cleaning up, I noticed something round. Being a coin addict, thats all it took. I ended up pulling out 3 Large Cents, and spent the next 2 hours looking for more..can't be THAT lucky.

They are all very worn, probably AG3 coins, but all have enough detail to identify what type they are. There are no dates on any of them. Looking through the Redbook they are all different.

Coin 1 is a Matron Head which was minted from 1816-1835. I can almost read the last 2 years in the date, I'll have to try some different lighting types.

Coin 2 is a Classic Head type which was minted from 1808 to 1814. This is the most worn of the 3.

Coin 3 is a Draped Bust type which was minted from 1796 to 1807.

Pretty neat, makes one wonder if someone put them there along time ago on purpose.

Tried to scan the Draped Bust...here goes nothing

  • Cool maybe they did but i'm not sure, the coins could have been 104 years old when the house was built, but it must have been a nice suprise.

The coin pictured is a 1797. I can tell by the die crack.

i've seen a product listed in different catalog's called Nic-A-Date that's supposed to "show" the date on worn nickels when applied. i'm not sure if it would work on copper. i'd imagine it wouldn't be something you'd use on anything of value.

your story reminds me of the time i pulled up the cover to the crawl-space in my house and discovered where the all the kid's hot-wheels had dissappeared to---they musta been playing with them and slipped them through the hole that would be used to lift up the cover!! no telling what's hiding in old houses. i've heard stories of coins that have slipped down heating ducts and such. never anything valuable, but it neat to find the old coins.

  • The draped bust cent is a 1797 S-129, 130. 131 or NC-8. Sine the die break in the field behind the head is very advanced it is probably S-131 or NC-8. This could be a very important coin alhough it isn't likely. The S-131 is a common variety but the NC-8 is currently unique. We realy need to see a good picture of the back of this coin.

Cool detective work, thebigeng and conder101! Wouldn't it be something if it turned out to be something really rare like the NC-8 - and only identifiable by die characteristics!

  • The reverse is really worn, not sure it will scan, but I will try and post the results here. Thanks guys, I don't know squat about large cents, but finding these has gotten me interested!

  • Great story. Looks like there is a little treasure hunter in all of us.
Buy the coin...but be sure to pay for it.
  • I cant get the reverse to scan worth you know what. Visually, all I can really make out is the TED in United, and some of the "wreath" in this area.

  • That should be good enough. Hold the coin so the D is upright. Is the point of the outermost leaf just to the right of the upright of the D or is it almost below the right side of the D? I won't say which is which because I don't want to bias your decision.

Oh my! There's only one small portion of the reverse which is visible, and it will be enough to determine if it's an N-8?
