Ike Dollar Variety Differences

I'm sure this is a stupid question, but how does one differentiate between the variety I and variety II Ike's? Thanks, Matt

  • Matt,
I just answered Gilbert,, he was talking about the same subject..An Article in CoinWorld tells quite a bit about the differences if you can get a copy.. August 19th, 2002 if you can find a copy.. there's about 3 different reverses... having to do with the craters, the shape of the World in the field, and the islands on that globe... It's in the Collector's Clearing House column, page 91.

  • I'm guessing he's referring to the bicentennial types... if so, the easiest way is to look at the lettering around the reverse rim.

Note the wider, plainer lettering on the Type 1 (left). The R in DOLLAR in particular is easy to spot.

Clad proofs are shown in photos, but the varieties apply to the business strikes as well.

There are a whopping 8 bicentennial Ike variations, as follows:

    1976 Type 1
    1976 Type 2
    1976-D Type 1
    1976-D Type 2
    1976-S Clad Proof Type 1
    1976-S Clad Proof Type 2
    1976-S Silver Type 1
    1976-S Silver Proof Type 1
  • Wow! The difference is really obvious when you see them side by side. Thanks for the info. Matt
