my coin scans come out blurry

Some scanners just don't scan 3-D objects very well, even though the coin might only be about 3/8 inch off the scanner glass. If you look at the scan you supplied, you'll notice that the edge of the slab is pretty clear, and thats the part that it the closest to the bed ao the scanner. I have a HP Scanjet 4400c, they aren't the clearest, but good enough for Ebay. I've attached a scan at only 150dpi.

My guess is that your scanner does not do well with depth. It looks like some of the holder is in focus probably the parts actually touching the glass. Everything else is blurry because the scanner cannot 'focus' very deep..

All of the above is correct. To prove it to yourself, scan one raw and it'll be in perfect focus. There isn't a fix I'm aware of. Mine did the same thing and I ended up buying a digital cam.

When you preview the scan, set it to scan only the coin, have none of the holder visable... it might not focus on the holder then

I just did this scan with mine.....

I use a HP 4200 and it has drop down menus with check boxes for sharpen detail, take extra time to rescan for better resolution and other options.

thanks guys...this is a scanner that is very thin...probably best made for documents...i had a real deep one that used to give smoking scans...wish I still had it.

Had one...same problem. Dumped it, bought the 4400C.
