Pictures are so hard to judge. The NGC coin seems a little low in the luster category.
Then again the PCGS one seems to have some gold toning and the seller states it is blast white. But the luster on the PCGS coin looks a lot better than the NGC one.
No opinion on the PCGS coin?
Bill
The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.
The picture seems fuzzy on the obverse in spots and the light reflection makes it's hard to get a good look at the finer details. The toning while I don't mind gold color seems to be very splotchy and for me does not add to the eye appeal but if you like it go for it. The reverse bottom lettering seems somewhat weak in the QUAR. I am suprised you didn't trip the reserve with a 3k bid thou.
Put the picture of the one at heritage and the one at ebay side by side. Either the ebay one is a bad picture or the heritage one is a much better struck coin.
The PCGS coin looks decent to be honest. I don't mind the mottled toning though it was no doubt dipped once before. Luster is still vibrant. The NGC coin does look flat in the luster dept and didn't survive its dipping(s) so well. Just a few scattered marks on the PCGS coin. Since you won't find a decent arrows quarter under $3,000 in PCGS65 from any major dealer, this looks like a decent buy IMO. There could be some chatter or hairlines hidden by the scan but the seller states it is PQ so you can return it if it is a low end piece. Though I like arrows quarters for some reason I get the feeling they have been unappreciated (or underrated) in recent months. Actually I'd say that for all MS seated quarters.
I honestly dont like either of them. The NGC one has a pretty nasty gash on her face. The PCGS one just looks baggy, maybe its the scan, tho the seller has pretty good ones.
Sean J Re-elect Bush in 2004... Dont let the Socialists brainwash you.
Is that a gash on the head or a die flaw? I looked at it and it seems raised,it even casts a small shadow. Anyway I agree with KoinKollector that I would try and wait for a better one than either of these two.
Bill, to me the coin has negative eye appeal. I wouldn't want it in my collection. It might be striking in person. I'd find out about their return privelege. I just bought a nice IHC from them and it was a nice coin and a very cordial transaction.
Using Heritage's enlarged scan feature shows the NGC in even worse light. You can see that the only place the luster is full and vibrant is inside the denticles. It fuzzes out everywhere else on the obverse. All those dull gray areas are luster deficient. A truly PQ will usually have luster on top of the flat part of the rim. This is a high point of the coin too and will show wear or damage early on. That is one way to compare superb untouched pieces from ones that have seen some handling over the years....esp. toned ones where the color hides things.
The PCGS coin looks to have the luster of a 66 coin. While it may have some scattered tics and lines, all of their 65's generally do. If you want a nicer one without more than a few tiny marks, be prepared to spend closer to $4,000 for a really PQ coin. A doggy one will fetch $2500-2750. This one is definitely a cut above low end IMO and for not much money. Luster is the key and this one has it. But I agree that a very PQ piece in the $3600-3800 range would be a better buy in the long run. For someone who likes toned coins, I prefer mottled toning like this than a freshly dipped piece. And there are plenty of us out there who think like that. Guaranteed down the road that there will be a backlash against overdipped and possibly all recently dipped coins. My 2 cents.
I have sent an email and will wait to see what they say. On a ticket this big they should offer a return privledge. If they do not it is a pass for sure.

Well I asked the seller about the gold toning in the picture and the luster on the coin and he said
<< <i>This coin is 95% original, lustrous white. The camera really threw a cast on this piece, and I'm not sure why. >>
He also stated
<< <i>We'll offer you a 5 day return (less auction related charges) if you're not satisfied. This is a really nice example, so I'm not too concerned about that possibility. >>
SO I BOUGHT IT. Its just a matter of waiting to see if it is all he said
Thanks again for everyones help.

Congrats on winning the coin and getting a fair return policy. You'll see it person soon, so I'll only add a little bit more to the discussion...
You should realize that the '74-S should come with a nice satiny luster. This is important to keep in mind when you assess the coin to see if it made the grade. Do not expect a vibrant frosty appeal...
Also, my limited experiences with Reeded Edge makes me uncomfortable dealing in sight-unseen business with them. In every case, they are way too excited about their material, calling them PQ+++ when I'd say that the stuff is just marginal. Decent.
Your coin is untoned. That's scary, considering that the seller already admits the coin is NOT 100% original. (Please, everyone, let's not get into a discussion about the virtues of toning vs blast white! This is meant to be a technical discussion.)
Finally, please keep in mind that that coin is not a rare date. This is not the opportunity of a lifetime. If you have any doubts whatsoever, just pass on it.
Bill, Hope this piece works out for you. And I will not throw any negative as you must really like it so far and thats what matters.
But I caught the part about them even stating 95% original.
I agree with EVP to really make sure on the surfaces as I'm sure you will. When we tend to spend this kind of money on a piece I know I get a stiff neck combing the thing.

Looks from the scan like a honest minimumly toned MS65. The price is fair and It would fit in all but the most fastidious or tone conscious collections . Assuming it passes the sight seen test; enjoy the new acquisition.
I agree with Trime. You may have gotten a medium range piece at a fair price. There's still enough seated material on the market so you can be choosy. While not a rare coin, the arrows type is a blue chip type coin that has always been in great demand during rising markets.
First let me say thanks to all for their great observations and opinions.
EVP & stmant thanks for the pointers concerning some of the things to look for. As everyone knows type collectors do not specialize in every or any series.
I to do not want to get into the toning/original VS white/dipped debate. I personally like white coins or light gold toning. I cannot afford monster toned and dispise ugly tone so I find it easy to accept a coin that may have had a quick bath but still retains a degree of mint luster.
I am hoping for the best but have never been afraid to return a coin that does not got it.
I will let everyone know how it turns out and if I keep it try to post a better pic.
Thanks again

I bought a $4K coin from him and he told me tuff $hit when I asked to return. I found a buyer on my own and lost less that the postage cost so I came out alright.
Did you buy it off Ebay or directly from him? His Ebay policy states no return for coins sold in auction but he does give a 5 day return on coins bought from his web site. That is why I emailed him prior to placing the winning bid and requested a return priveledge for this auction which he did give me on this coin.

well a dipped white coin, okie lustre from the scan this may change if i saw this coin in person with many marks or whatever you call them, i think it is a just made it on the obverse for a 65 with the reverse a solid 65
nothing special about this coin i would return this coin if i had a chance
just my opinion based on the scan
there are 5 coin types
crappy average good very good great
only buy GREAT coins this is an average to good coin a pass for me
Here's my two cents worth while trying not to be overly negative. The coin is certainly dipped and while it's going to look really lustrous and flashy in person, it would appear that the technical merits are low end at best. I see a lot of chatter going on and in person I bet you'll see even more. THere also appears to be slight discoloration and possibly some little specks throughout, all of which could possibly lead to future problems. THis seller knows what he's doing and to make a statement like "95% original white" is misleading to say the least.
Not trying to put down your choice, nor am I saying this because I prefer toned coins. But coins like this even if bought at a "good" price often turn out not to be such good deals. Let us know how it turns out but I'd get that return label printed up just in case.
wwbillman: If this coin was in a "hot" series then you would have to seriously consider keeping this coin. I do agree with michael and tonelover's description of the coin.
It would qualify as a "return" only because you have possibly a few more months to find a nicer coin for not much more money. But the window of opportunity seems to be closing fast. But hurry and stretch money wise if you can and get a real unquestion FULL gem!
Bill, I hope you're happy with this one! It's always exciting opening the package in anticipation. How did it go with Legend's 1921 GEM Peace dollar? That one looked like a Blazer! Did it look as good in person?
