Would you buy a colorized coin from the Mint?

Various Mints have already utilized such methods including the Canadian Mint as of a few years ago.

What do you think if the U.S. Mint were to offer colorized coins?
A thing of beauty is a joy for ever

  • I wouldn't purchase any of them. I don't own a single colorized coin. They just aren't appealing to me.
  • Colorized (and hologram) coins just don't seem right to me. Don't own any at the moment and don't expect to. image

I'm more inclined to buy a colorized coin done at the mint than one colorized using liver of sulphur outside the mint. Seems more original to me.

The canadian hologram coins aren't all the same either. the silver holo maple leaf and the transportation commems are nothing more than a hologram sticker, while the gold coins have the hologram struck into the coin (don't ask me how, apparently it's top secret info.) there was a program on the discovery channel where they showed the machine that does it tho.

No, but I have one! My grandmother knows I collect coins, and bought me one from QVC for Christmas last year!!!!!! I didn't have to feign surprise because I was, and it was a very sweet present. Now I have trouble making fun of colorized coins because I think of this one. Funny how all things are relative to their circumstances. (I'm sure you physics nuts understand that).

  • I'm in the same boat - I would NEVER buy one of the things but my parents (dear people that they are)
bought me one of the painted ASE coins for my birthday a couple of years ago. So I have one in my collection
that I cannot part with because they ask about it when they want to talk to me about coins.

My grandmother gave me one of these for Christmas one year. It's a 1999 Silver Eagle with a colorful Miss Liberty. I don't care much for it at all, though it was nice of her to think of me. The color looks like it was put on using an old dot matrix printer. I try to look at the bright side, at least by ruining some coins, the populations of mint state eagles will drop. Then eBay sellers everywhere will be able to realize the true value of these RARE LOW POPULATION GEMS. . . just kidding! image

in 1999 I picked up a couple of the first state quarters that were colorized, just because they were cheap and I thought they'd be a kick.

They are ugly, not just ugly but UGLY

No, I'll not do that again.

I don't care much for them but a lot of non collectors especially old granny ladies buy them for their grandchildren. I have some colorized Chinese Unicorns, some Hong Kong Trade Dollars and other DarkSide coins that look real pretty with the design elements colorized. The only reason I have them is because they were minted in 1997 and I got them for my girl.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • I know I don't want any painted coins BUT if you want to see something absolutely beautiful ask Dabigkahuna to post another pic of his Canadian Gold coin. It is sweet! I'll take one of them babies any day!! image

  • I'll have to go against the grain here and say yes, it is possible that I might purchase something colorized from the mint. I have a few of the colorized Canadian coins. It would depend on what it was, and if it was colorized in a similar manner to the Canadian coins. I will never get anything that is painted or colorized after it leaves the mint. I might be the only one on the board that actually makes a distinction between a mint colorized coin and one that has been colorized after leaving the mint. I'm also wondering if colorizing a coin is something the mint could do on its own or if it would require congressional approval. I bet the latter. image

Sure, I'd buy one in a second. But the coin would have to come with a Certificate of Authenticity stating that is was naturally colorized without any human interventionimage and a Certificate of Ugliness, stating that it was a truly ugly coin only fit for those who are ignorant, love schlock, don't own a cat whose litter box can produce naturally colorized coins, or just plain wacko (like me).image Both certificates would have to bear original signatures of the Secretary of Treasury, the Director of the Mint, and Elvis Presley.image

I don't think I want to be to rigid on the issue of colored and hologrammed coins. Coins are another form of art and new inovations are usually criticized at first and appreciated later. There are lots of examples in former coin designs that were very controversial if not despised at first. This doesn't mean that new art can't be ugly. Incidentally, I always find each new model of Porche unattractive and love the old ones (No, I don't own one , new or old).

Fortunatly the guy that painted mine, a Mr. Harry Ying Yang, who was a guest in China's Political Prision Gulag #2, was taken out and excuted the next day and his body organs harvested so he'll never ruin another coin!!

  • I think the colorized coins are cute.

    Why knock 'em?

You don't like 'em don't buy 'em!
My younger cousin loves the colorized coins she sees on TV. I say good, they will get her in the door and I'll do the rest!

You only see the negative of these things... I see the cup half full !!!

    Rusty.
  • I would never buy one myself. I am suprised that the companies that tart up the SAE and other beautiful coins dont get hauled in for "Defacing the Currency". If it is not a crime against the money it is a crime against the art of coinage. Not to be negative about the Canadian Mint, which makes some beautiful coins, but they also make a lot of coins for other nations that are strictly made just to make a profit. Anybody want a Jamacian Anniversary Five Dollar Coin made by the Canadian Mint? It isnt painted but it is in "pure" sterling silver. The US Mint would be better off investing more effort into created better proof and MS coins, along with creating better made and more beautiful business strikes. IMHO. Kris.

If the US Mint truely wants to cash in on a new market, they should offer something a little more exciting than just plain old colorized Coins done up by Aborigine Artists subcontracted by the Royal Aussy Mint.

Could we get a super delux Paint Your Own Silver Eagles Kit for $49.95? I think it would go over very well.

Could you see this as the newest social trend in America? Kindergarten Teachers pushing painted Silver Eagles on our households at an alarming rate? Children painting Coins instead of eggs at Eastertime? Fathers getting something other than goofey ties and Old Spice on Father's Day?

I think I could just for type, to say I had one. Yet a lot would depend on what the coin is, the design and how the color(s) was done. Also the issue price and mintage would be factors as well.
I already have from the Canadian Mint $20 Silver pieces with gold cameo and hologram. Again just for type and not the whole series. Have been thinking about getting one of their colorized 25c coins with red maple leaf.
I wouldn't get any commercial colorized coin. A co-worker got a set of colorized state quarters. I thought they were down right ugly. I didn't say so to his face as he was pleased with them. Every collector has his / her likes and dislikes. To me the colors weren't too appealing.
