Dealer Story

I was in my local coin store looking at an AU half-dime it was expensive (for me) so i wasnt sure if i should get it, I asked him what the grade was and he said $90 i look at him and said " sorry could u tell me the grade again." he smiles and tells me $90 dollars. getting kind of confused i say "the grade is $90." "he says oh sorry it's AU-58" it turns out that he thought i was talkng his price down so he took $30 bucks off an $120 coin. and u people say a dealer will never take down the price without u asking. imageimageimage

  • He was using a very old grading system that went from 1-100,000. They had to change it when a coin sold for $101,000! imageimage

I had a similar experience with my local dealer. About five months ago I was in his shop and fell in love with a raw, heavily toned, Morgan he had sitting in his case. I had him pull it out so I could examine it while at the same time asking his price. He went into a long story about the coin and how he acquired it for $50 and he couldn't/wouldn't go any lower than $75. I told him I'd think about it and he said, "I'll tell you what, I'll just put it on my desk with your name on it." Well, five months later I go into the shop, re-introduce myself, look around, then I asked if he still had the toned dollar. "Oh yeah, yeah. Let me go find it." He returns with the coin and I pull out my loupe (I've learned a little over the past six months) and begin to inspect the coin to determine its grade although it is the toning I'm buying. I asked him what his opinion of grade is and he says he won't grade it because all it was to him was a fifty dollar bill. A $50 bill, eh? Evidently he had forgotten the price he quoted me five months earlier and I got it for what he originally claimed he had in it....image
