1939 FS Jeff 5c with reverse of '38

In reviewing online pop report for Jefferson 5c, I noticed that PCGS now recognizes 1939 PDS Reverse of '38 and Reverse of '40 as separate varieties. As any Jefferson collector knows, the 1939 Reverse of '38 varieties are far scarcer with FS than the corresponding Reverse of '40 coins.Yet the pop report figures indicate a large preponderance of Reverse of '38 FS coins. It would appear that when the new varieties were added to the data base, existing coins were assumed to be Reverse of '38 when all were in fact Reverse of '40. Anybody know the facts?

  • Emzee - welcome to the boards! You are correct on all counts.

Here is a couple of link to previous threads, with the announcement from
PCGS, and all of the follow-up discussion.

    Thread 1

    Thread 2

I think they got it backwards (undesignated coins should be assumed to be Type 2), but am
pleased that they decided to make the distinction, particularly since they have also changed the
policy in regards to grading Type 1 full-step coins.

  • Actually, neither of those are the thread I was trying to find, and now I can't
locate the correct one. But if you search for "Jefferson" either here,
or in the US Coin forum, you will find plenty of info (and opinions)!
  • hey you are correct.but I think the rev of 1940 steps will be the harder ones to get with full steps
because most have all been graded and new ones will have the rev of 38 and since pcgs has changed their grading standard on rev of 39 steps I think more of those will be graded than the rev of 40 with full steps
All we can do is see

  • Stockford, you are right the reverse of 40 will be much rarer. -mark-
