How is NTC doing?

Has anyone seen a decent number of their product to formulate an opinion as to how on or off the mark NumisTrust Corp is? I've been looking at a Coin World ad where the dealer is asking premium money for NTC slabbed coins.

Also, is it just me, or does anybody else prefer to know who is behind some of the dealer business names, particularly the newer ones? Spare Change Inc comes to mind.

  • They're really crappy at grading. I used to have a couple and they were way overgraded. They're like an ACG2.

littwitcher is right, they are are just like ACG, but with a nicer holder. They are headquartered in
Florida, I live in Tampa Bay, I have seen a few dealers promoting their garbage at shows, I saw
one dealer at the Clearwater show(200 tables including NGC and ANACS) with about 50 of their coins
in one of his cases, I looked at some of the gold and so called DCAM Franklins, After a few minutes,
I thanked him for his time and continued on my way. Avoid it with the same vigor as ACG.

Why is it that when a business name or brand name has the word trust, honest or similar in it, it is the furthest from the truth.
    NumisTrust Corp
    Honest Al's used cars
    etc
    etc.

Seems that there is some worldwide force that pulls shysters and trustworthy names together.

Lanlord : you're right, look at all the savings and loans that scammed people and went under
in the 80's, most were named savings and trust, something or other.

  • There seems to be an awful large amount of MS67 Ikes, Franklins, tougher date Washington Quarters, etc. in NTC holders. I stay away and run from dealers selling many NTC coins!!

The only coins I have any NTC experience with are proof Kennedy's, a dozen or so slabs I bought early on when I didn't know any better. In this series, they suck. Their grading is every bit as bad as ACG. On the upside, they forgot the Accented Hair designation on one slab that I got for $12.

  • I submitted dozens of various coins to them, during the $5 special they were running, and have bought a few a shows. IMO, they're not bad with copper (must be a different grader for copper), but really suck at everything else, especially moderns... then again, ICG and ANACS suck at grading moderns too. More ICG PR70's than NTC PR70's on eBay, but for some reason ICG doesn't get bashed for it.

    Crito,

    ICG gets bashed plenty.

That's just one of many threads stomping them.

  • Russ,

How did I miss that earlier thread! It would have given me a chance to agree with GMarguli on just about every post he had and every point he made, which is unusual! I would never pay more then an MS63 price sight-unseen for a Morgan graded by ICG as a 65.

I must have missed the ICG bashing party image But seriously, I've never heard of anyone getting a bodybag back from ACG, and I've gotten three from NTC. I'd put them on the same level with SEGS and ICG. PCI gold and ACG belong on the bottom rung all by themselves IMO.

Regarding the outfit called Spare Change, it's apparently run by a guy known as "Vinnie", as per this thread. He used to work for Numismatic Consultants and after that Slater Coins. I've seen him mentioned a few times on the boards, but never with a last name attached.

There is a forum member that got one once. I believe it was for a Mercury dime that was cracked out of an ANACS. ACG said counterfeit. I think MICHAELDIXON was the submitter. Conder101 probably has the bodybag in his safe somewhere.

From what I was told about NTC, they started by buying PCGS/NGC coins and cracking them and putting them into NTC slabs at the same grade. Then they actually started grading and went to hell.

The stuff I've seen is awful. Pure junk!

since you mentioned michael dixon, he reported the following in an older NTC thread:

"At this past weekend's coin auction in Frederick, MD, the NTC slabbed Lincoln cents brought more than the PCI, ICG or ACG slabbed Lincoln cents. The NTC slabbed Lincolns were 1962,63 and 64 Proofs, the PCI were S mint BU wheats, the ICG were S mint BU wheats and the ACG were a Proof wheat, 1987 S and another common date. Each were 3 coin lots. Not that this information brings NTC anymore credibility."

For some reason, they seem to be better with copper... but since they can't print labels correctly and have a tendency to get flakes of their PVC looking green insert material all over my coins, I quit using them. Wish they had been better with moderns. been watching auctions this weekend, most of seylevel's PCGS slabbed moderns closed at less than the slabbing fee. At $5 I might have been able to make a little money, if NTC could grade them properly, which they can't. At $10 it's a loosing proposition for sure.

I agree with you Lanlord. It's like George Carlin says:
If the label says all natural, it ain't.
If the label says home made, it ain't.
He had a whole list of these but I forget.

When someone starts a sentence with, "I have to tell you the truth," it probably won't be.

I wasn't born a cynic, just grew into one.

    Kranky

Looks like a few folks in the Registry Forum have nothing but praise for this Vinnie and Spare Change, Inc. Well the NTC question came about because of the Spare Change ad in the 9/23 Coin World (numerous high grade NTC slabs with high dollar pricetags, i.e., 1902-0 MS64 $1 for $200; 1878-S MS64 $1 for $800 this one has to be a Trade dollar but it doesn't say; 1950 Half PR66 $1100)

I guess he is the owner of the PCGS crossed coins, he has no regard what slabs he has, or someone is trying to pull my leg.

The only NTC slab I have is well graded, if not undergraded by a point or two... then again, it is a common 1957 PR 1c.

Gilbert, you probably saw my comment in the thread I linked in my post above. At least in one case, he was selling an ACG slab at a first-tier service price.
