Ike collectors - It will be interesting to see what this goes for.

A 1978 Ike $ in NGC MS67! This is the highest grade ever given to this date by either service. Does this really look like a 67 to you guys? I sure would like an MS67 to look a lot cleaner then the one in this picture, unless those are just some marks on the holder.

This seller has good feedback, but he says "NGC is by far more conservative on their grading than PCGS."! Wow, he must have never done a PCGS submission!!!!!

If it goes for much I have a MS66 1978 that I may need to cross to NGC!

Hmmmm... If I look at it for 5 seconds, yup, MS67 all the way. But if I cheat and stare longer, I can't tell if what appears to be nicks on the cheek and head are on the coin or the holder. Coin MS67, holder AU58. Thats what the HepKitty Sez!

These come pretty nice sometimes. This example is from very
fresh dies which are well alligned giving the coin a lot of appeal. I
would expect this coin to be proof like, though it doesn't show
up in the scan. While it is highly desirable it does have what
would seem to be too much marking to make MS-67. It's never
safe to grade by a scan, but those ticks are on the coin.

It will be interesting to see what it goes for.

Gee, notice how he snuck "PCGS" in to the title? Now, there couldn't be any ulterior motive for that, could there?

    CK,

That is a terrible pic. I sure would like to see the coin. Ike's are so hard to photograph. I wonder how the chatter really looks in person.

  • Russ, how do you think I found it!image

(Actually, I thought you were talking about me at first! Then I realized I hadn't put PCGS in the title of this thread!)

Sometimes I wonder how much good it actually does people to do that (put PCGS in the title, etc.)

    JJacks,

"PCGS" is, I believe, the number two most frequently used search word. It certainly brings the auction of for a lot of us - myself included.

  • If someone buys it I hope they like the NGC holder and do not try a cross in any grade with PCGS. Its a loser if he does.

The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.

  • Bill, I can only hope that if someone does that, they post the results on this board! And assuming the coin doesn't cross, they crack it, and submit to PCGS and submit the results!!! Of course, that isn't about to happen!imageimage

Yep can't be a 67, NGC just throw around those high grades on moderns, oops wait a minute they have only given out one 67 and 12 in 66, so nevermind. All I can say is I wouldn't know a 66 from 67 on a IKE. I don't collect business strikes. But if anyone on here can tell the difference between a 66 & 67 especially from an ebay scan through a plastic slab and since there aren't any other (1978P) 67's to compare it too then you are a far better man than me. image Seriously if anyone has another 67 business strike I'd like to see a photo of it.
  • One of the difficulties with Ikes is the difference between the ms silver ikes and the clads. There are lots of ms 67 in silver. They look nearly perfect. There will be absolutely no dings or nicks on them. If that big honker on the cheek is on the coin, forget an ms 67. I think the reason high grade ms ikes are hard to find is the graders compare how the silver looks to the clads. You just cant find the clad Ikes as nice as the silvers.

if it only said "free graded PCGS coin of your choice" i might be tempted to bin.
  • IrishMike, good points, except that few high-grade Ikes from NGC doesn't (necessarily) make them a strict grader. It could also be due to the fact that the vast majority of high-grade Ikes are sent to PCGS instead. PCGS has basically a monopoly on the high-end Ike market. But if the seller gets $3K for an NGC MS67, that might change. image

I don't have much first-hand experience with MS66 (and no experience with MS67) clad NGC Ikes to have much of an opinion on their grading.

On this coin, I can't tell what marks are on the coin vs. on the holder or debris. But as jmp81 points out, I don't like what appears to be a fingerprint around the T in LIBERTY.
