    According to the Red Book, .950 copper and .050 zinc. Weight 3.11 grams.

  • To compare it to the other alloy the other copper cents were 95% copper and 5% tin AND zinc. This meant that the 5% that was not copper should be made up of both of these metals but that the specific ratio of the two was left up to the mint and they could vary it as they wished By 1962 they were down to just using a trace of tin at which time the composition was changed to 95% copper 5% zinc, the same as in the shell case cents.
