Just got my body bag back

I jst got my body bagged 1853 Large cent back. It is labeled MS RB wich I assume they are calling Mint State red brown. It is also marked cleaned or wizzed. I will try to post a picture tomorrow, just to get some opinions. I can not tell it has been cleaned at all. It looks MS64 to me. If the coin is tilted in the light you see areas in the fields that without better technical knowledge look to me like case hardening on an old rifle. It looks like old faded luster?? I really am tempted to re sumit, but want some opinions, as I hate to spend the money for nothing. I will try to post some pics tomorrow. My digital camera is at the office.

sorry to hear that..... many large cents are expertly enhanced and only the real copper guys with lots of experience can tell also many already in holders have been processed for lack of a bettwr word i would love to see this coin in person then i could suggest to you what your next step is but that i think will not happen well post a good quality digital photo and let me have a look see

    sincerely michael
  • MSRB is just a code on the body bag. It doesn't have any relation to a grade. I saw a bodybagged 1909-s IHC with the same designation. The coin had vf details. Sorry.

MS RB just corresponds to the coin number that you submitted the coin under or it was entered into their system as.

Welcome to the club, which includes myself. All of the Forum members -- except a rare few -- will tell you they have received a body bag, or few, back among their submissions, some of which PCGS blew and some of which we spotted the problem after its return ... just part of the price of the registry/submission game. We all incur a few casualties, deserved and undeserved.
  • Michael,

Thanks for the offer to give me your opinion. If you or anyone else can help me from these phots, I would appreciate it . I am just trying to learn why they said this one was cleaned.

    Thanks, Jay

rings around the stars makes me think dipped and retoned. though doesn't look abrasively cleaned or wizzed. non-abrasive dips may be acceptable on silver, but not on copper.

It may be the scans but the obverse is a sort of darker color while the reverse is a washed out matte
grayish look. Luster remains around the reverse lettering and near the wreath. It doesn't look like there is much elsewhere. The reverse rim is sort of banged up a bit too - not something you would expect to see on the majority of 64 or better coins. Copper is funny. I try to avoid it raw unless the coin screams originality as it seems one out of every 4 to 5 coins I send in gets bagged. Silver is easier to decipher.

  • Something about that coin "just doesn't look quite right" IMHO. Also, what is going on with the date? it looks like either a serious repunch or something or a bad spot in the picture.
So many coins, so little money!

  • Sorry for the pictures. The color of the coin is the same on both sides. It is like the obverse photo. Reverse looks lighter in picture than in reality. It is so tough to take good pictures. I think I will show it to some dealers at a show, where it can be viewed in person. Thanks for all the help. I am learning fast how difficult copper can be. I am trying not to buy caoins already slabbed as i am trying to actually learn drading and condition as I go. I know this will be costly, buf fun and agravating all at the same time. There is just no challenge in buying it already slabbed.
