I posted this a couple months back and wanted to give a followup. I had some commems in the real old First generation PCGS holders(old grade) and sent them back to PCGS.
old thread
<< <i>I just received my 5 breakouts I submitted at Long Beach The four commems were in old holders from the 1980s and the SLQ was in a newer plastic .
Old grade new grade
Albany 65 64
Texas 66 65
Texas 66 65
Huguenot 65 62
Antietam 66 65
SLQ 65 66
I'm not blind and I was expecting each to come back at least what they were. I expected a 67 from one Texas and possibly the Antietam. The Hugunot did not look that good after I broke it out but its at least a 64. The Albany is a solid 65. I'll be sending most of these off to NGC. PCGS is playing games.. >>
Well the coins came back from NGC
Albany 65
Texas 66
Huguenot 65
Antietam 65
I also had a old Robinson PCGS65, regrade PCGS64 and come back NGC65 and an old Cal in PCGS63 which they BBd the second time come back as NGC64.
Now I know that some will say..see..NGC is real loose, just remember that these were in old PCGS holder as the grader that NGC gave them with amazing consistancy with the 15 year old PCGS grade.
How the Huguenot went from 65 to 62 and then 65 is beyond me. But I may be looking for some PCGS62 Hugys at LB

In other words, not ALL coins receive the 5- 10 second grading scan.

What a great coin that Antietam is! I'm not a big commem guy, however, I have always considered the Civil War inspired commemms, especially the Antietam, to be spectacular!! Congratulations on owning such a beauty. I think this crackout experiment says a lot more about the absolute myth that those small, original PCGS holders were graded so strictly than it does about the PCGS/NGC argument. The propaganda poored upon the collecting public, by PCGS dealers and others, about the strict grading practices used for those first generation holders has time and again, over many series, proved to absolute crap. Any collector has to use just as much grading skill on those coins as they do with the modern holder. Period. I'm glad you are happy with the current holders & grades.
Can't you just hear their little fingertips just POUNDING away at the keyboard? Hold on, here it comes!
Yes, I gave one end of the spectrum on my comment. However,
I think NO coin should receive a grade after 10 seconds. For me, that's new news and should never happen, even with experts. A coin should have a minimum of 30 seconds, no matter modern or classic. Just an opinion.

The Antietam and Gettysburg are two of my favorite coins of history. Few people realize that even without tanks and bombers the Battle of Antietam cost more American lives than any other battle in history.
Also, I'll be posting pictures of the Huguenot in all three holders this weekend

One day I will buy a commem. I hope to find a misgraded coin so I can contribute to the cherrypicking thread
All right, you promised us pictures of the Huguenot in all 3 holders, so give!
