Is this a die clash?

I have seen this coin up for auction a few times and have always wondered if the lines on the rev. are the shield from the obv. If it is, it looks tempting to bid on for the old MS type set I'm building. Your thoughts please. I've tried to mirror the image and overlay but photodeluxe won't run in XP. Any good software ideas for imaging in XP?

Sure is, you can clearly see the horizontal shield lines in the denomination on the reverse. It's harder to make out the details in the obverse fields.

Thanks Paul, I thought so but with each series there are so many different little things I just wasn't really sure. I think it's a neat piece and just different enough for me. Are they common?

I did a bit of searching and Heritage has sold half a dozen with less severe clashing than this one (I know nothing about HDimes). Here's one with some of the shield showing. On the Ebay coin there's obvious clash marks in the lower right fields of the reverse as well (her arm?). Aside from shield marks, it can be tough to figure out what the clashed design elements are since they're in opposite relief. Cool coin.

Thanks again, that's a much better picture and now I can see the clash a lot better in the ebay pic. I'm going to think about it a while, it's been a while since a purchase, this one seems to talk to me> If it doesn't shut-up I'll bid. The pit in the obv. field is a little eye catching to the negative but the clash coolness makes up for it.

Neat die clash and grade looks right,the die clash does not need to be on both sides.In this case as Shylock said the shield shows and also the reverse of the hair,lower right.Al

Ah yes, now that grip points it out I see the incuse hair design. You can also make out the base of the obverse design at the top of the reverse. In the clearer Heritage image it's more obvious.

A lot of half dimes have significant die clashing. I have one where you can see an outline of the date on the reverse, as well as the outline of liberty.

Does Pcgs denote 'clashed dies" as an error or even at all?

I have a gold dollar with a very clear outline of Liberty on the reverse and the wreath can be seen in the fields on the obverse. I have had the coin for a long time but only just noticed it after I picked up another coin recently. I imagine it would look awsome on a large coin like a Morgan or a double eagle!

Is it a Type 2 Gold Dollar? Those usually have great clashes.

I forgot to mention that I just bot a new machine with Windows XP on it and I am a bit disappointed. It won't let me download a Java reader of all things! A message pops up that says Sun Micro sued them over allowing MS owners to download it from the net! Shessh!

i'd hope pcgs wouldn't denote "clashed dies" , since it is all to common on coins of that era, esp. smaller denom's. segs does sometimes. late 1850's seated coinage is comon in unc grades - which is why they are perfect type coins. the 1 shown looks weakly struck to me. probably is worth $140 - TOPS.

speaking of clashed dies, I STILL am looking for any 3cn PROOF's w/ clashed dies, will gladly pay 50% over asking price for the un-clashed coins.

Yeah! type two's. I just looked at them again and both the 1854 and 1855 have the clashes. Very sharp and clear outlines of Liberty on the 1854 but the 1855 has the better wreath impression on the obverse. Guess its time to do some reading up. Any thoughts on a good book that talks about clashes or gold dollars?

When all else fails....read the instructions!
