Got my Kennedy's posted by PCGS

And I don't really think I'm too dissapointed. I went through all my raw Kennedys, most of which were pulled out of mint sets, and I pulled out what I thought were the 20 best pieces. After about a day or so I pulled 7 out and was going to send 13 of them in for grading. At the last minute I said the heck with it and sent them all in - here's what I'm getting back:

1 90014433 1971-D 50C MS65
2 90014434 1973 50C MS65
3 90014435 1978 50C MS66
4 90014436 1984-P 50C MS65
5 90014437 1985-P 50C MS66
6 90014438 1986-P 50C MS65
7 90014439 1987-P 50C MS65
8 90014440 1987-D 50C MS64
9 90014441 1988-P 50C MS64
9 90014442 1988-P 50C MS65
10 90014443 1988-D 50C MS66
11 90014444 1989-P 50C MS64
12 90014445 1989-D 50C MS64
13 90014446 1992-P 50C MS64
14 90014447 1993-P 50C MS64
15 90014448 2001-P 50C MS65
16 90014449 2001-D 50C MS65
17 90014450 2002-D 50C MS65
18 90014451 2002-D 50C MS66
19 90014452 1991-P 50C MS64
20 90014453 1992-D 50C MS65

As I said, I'm really not surprised at the grades, thought that perhaps one might make it to 67, but overall I was quite pleased. Now I realize that the down side of this is that basically I have a bunch of common stuff, but it'll be neat to see what differentiates 64, 65, and 66 halves. Alas - another passtime!

    Frank,

Pretty nice. There's nothing wrong with owning an inexpensive set of certified Kennedys in MS.image

  • Thanks Don:

I'm thinking that I'll use these as guides for getting future coins - maybe this is a set that I can make up of entirely "home made" coins!

    Frank,

That's what I did with MS and PR Kennedys. I love the look of some of the MS coins. They really look great in full luster. Based on my limited experience, PCGS is really concerned with strike for the MS coins, and they seem to dislike the halo around the bust. They also focus on the neck on the obverse and the shield on the reverse. A decent strike coin with good hair detail and minimal neck chatter with nice fields will go 66 almost every time. Good luck, and if you get stuck for any dates, I might have duplicates to trade. Just drop me a line.

  • Cool - thanks Don - good advice. I was looking at the face, neck and shield areas for chatter, or lack there of, so it'll be interesting what's what when they come back. One piece of particular interest had tiny craters all over the field in front of Kennedy's face. Almost as if it had been struck with a rusted die. I'll be interested to see how that one graded - I almost thought that one would be bodybagged.

Frank, I found one of my old submissions, and thought you would get a charge out of it. It looks alot like yours. Try #337326 . I still disagree with them about the 71-D.image

  • Amazingly similar Don:

There's a small coin show here near Birmingham this weekend so I'll be rummaging through mint sets to see if I find anything worthwhile - I'm kind of glad that I started looking at these coins - maybe I'll get another inexpensive shipment out to PCGS before this is over image

    Regards,

    Frank
